Lantus storage - I read on this Board that opened Lantus solostar pens should be stored in frig but per the Lantus pamphlet once open should be stored at room temp ?? I know unopened should be refrigerated .... thanks

Keeping the in-use pen refrigerated extends its life beyond the 28 days. When used for humans they often need to carry on person hence the non-refrigeration clause. In most human applications the pen will be depleted before the 28 days. Kitties usually get a much smaller dose and won't use the entire pen within the 28 days so keeping it refrigerated you can used 4-6 months and not waste it.

But if I use within 30 days can I leave out of frig because with 2 cats on insulin I will use within that time

Are they both on high doses? Even with two cats I doubt you will use a pen in 28 days. Is there a reason why you don’t want to keep it in the fridge ?

They both get 3 units twice a day and the only reason I am worried about the fridge is because the pamphlet inside the Lantus package says specifically NOT to keep in there after opening and using first dose (before it is open it must stay in fridge ...so I just questioned why it would say that ?

The only reason that's in the pamphlet is because of the "dial-a-dose" mechanism. They found that refrigeration can cause it to malfunction.

Since we don't use that and just use regular insulin syringes to pull the insulin out of the pen, it's a non-issue for us

I read an article about it....the "warning" didn't used to be on the pamphlet but as more and more people used the pens, they started noticing that the mechanism wasn't working right when it was cold

But the main reason is to keep the insulin from degrading....at the price of insulin, we want it to last as long as possible!

Yeah I was under the impression that it was the PEN that needed to not be kept in the fridge, but the insulin is fine kept there and will keep for longer that way anyway.
