I just received my order from a friend who had 2 unused Lantus Pens due to his cat not using it anymore. Do I need to refrigerate these pens that are in the box or does this stuff work just fine without refrigeration?

And of course will the stuff last past 28 days if I keep the pen in the refrigerator?

Yes, keep the pen in the fridge except when drawing out the insulin. It should last until the pen is empty. I have used pens till when they were empty when dosing 1 1/2 units twice a day.

Congratulations on acquiring the Lantus pens. But please keep it in the refrigerator. It will have an expiration date on the pen...follow that date. I have been using the pens since last May and my girl is doing well. Godd luck from Jane and Stewey

Thank you both! I will go store both pens in the fridge now. Do you guys know anything about meters? I also got the Bayer Contour Next meter and it read 202 for Poopers just now but my Kroger's brand said 217. The guy that gave me this stuff said that the meter has been fairly accurate for him and it has a good rating for the meter.

I just kept it in the box that it came in too. It just came in a USPS box with no ice pack or anything but I put the Lantus box the 2 pens came in into the fridge just now. I checked on the Lantus box and it has an exp date of 2017.

The accuaracy of meters is only +/- 20%, Wiht a BG of 200 that error is 40 points. The the 202 and 217 are well within the accuracy.

See my signature link Glucometer Notes for some details on how glucometers work and feline-specific reference ranges for human glucometers.

Be sure to store the Lantus in the body of the fridge, not the door.
.
when I 1st got my lantus my vet said I didn't need to store in fridge then I read I should but I have it in my door. Why is it necessary to put in main part of fridge and is there any way to know if its been compromised?

My vets told me that the knocks it might receive when the door opens and closes plus the greater temperature fluctuations weren't good for the Lantus. There's a sticky on the Lantus and Levemir support group board which may have further info for you. Sorry I haven't time to post the link for you (off to pick up my baby from the vets).

Yea I am keeping the lantus pens in the original Lantus box they came in and got them stored in the bottom compartment area of the fridge towards the back.

sounds good....

most of us make a little nest somewhere that doesn't get moved around a lot.....

the door slams open and shut depending on how many live there.....
too much shaking....
don't roll it either.....
it does not need stirring.

Yep all I am doing is taking off the cover to the Pen and turning it upside down and taking syringe and injecting the amount I need and thats it.
