Lantus pen question(s)

Hello:
My cat Floyd's dosage of Lantus varies between 1/4 and 1/2 units twice daily - as you can imagine, I barely make a dent in the 10 ml vial.

When I discussed the pen with my pharmacist, she said it can only be administered in 1 unit increments, and that you don't draw it in a syringe. That seems to contradict what I see here. Can somebody explain how to get at the insulin in the pen?

Also, when I google "Lantus pen", something called a "Solarstar" pen comes up - is that the pen that I see is being referred to on this site?

Thanks for any clarification you can provide,
Jen

Just draw the insulin out of the pen. Stick the syringe needle where the pen needle cost and draw the insulin out. Try not to inject air into the pen.
BTW, I tried using the pen with my high-dose Tonis, it was harder that the syringe.

Thanks Larry… I've never seen the pen , so I wasn't sure if it was physically possible.

Does the pen still get store in the refrigerator? I've read that doing so affects the pen's mechanism, but I assume that wouldn't be an issue considering I would be drawing the insulin from the pen.

Forgive my simpleton questions - this is all still new to me.

Yes, keep the pens in the fridge. Have you read the Lantus handling and storing sticky? http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=151 The other stickies on the Lantus board may have answers to other questions you may have. Of course, feel free to post here on Health with questions

Yes squeem3...
I had read the stickie note (and viewed the wonderful video) before my original post - it's just that the Lantus website has some contradictory info. I've got the answers I needed. Sorry to have troubled you,
Jen

Remember this insulin is intended for human not cat use, so what you read on the website is geared to how a human would use the insulin. And most humans require more than 1 unit of insulin.

Think of the pen the same way as the vial - as a vessel to hold the insulin, and just a smaller vessel - and instead of using the syringes that are sold with the pens, you just continue to use the syringes you have and do everything the same as you did with the vial. It's just a different container.
