The pen can only be adjusted in .5 increments. Does anyone know if there's any reason the insulin can't be shot from the pen into a sterile container and then sucked back up in a syringe to effect dosing in .25 increments.

Thanks guys I thought it could be done. I haven't seen the pen myself as it's for my mum's cat across the other side of the country so having never used one myself i had no idea how.

It definitely does half unit dosing though - maybe different in Australia from where you are Larry?

You have to eyeball 0.25 and 0.75 increments on syringes; they aren't marked that finely.

Magnifiers help a great deal with this. There are clip ons for those who wear glasses already (ex Carson Clip and Flip), visor magnifiers for those who don't wear glasses, and free standing magnifiers of many shapes and configurations. Use our SHOP link above to check your local Amazon site. Purchases made that way help support this board.

Thanks, mum's eyesight isn't so crash hot so I'll pass on that info - and ensure that she purchases through the fdmb link if she doesn't already have a magnifying gadget to use. This board saved Vyktor's life so that's not much to do in return :-D

 just spoke to mum it does only do 1 unit adjustments.

Hi Dyana I can't believe your boy is 20 now! That is so awesome Vyktor turned 18 in september - maybe they should start a middle aged mens club - I refuse to concede that he's old

Have her purchase insulin syringes at the pharmacy (regular syringes - NOT the needles that work w/ the insulin pens). When you remove the lid to the pen, there's a little rubber stopper that looks like the top of an insulin vial. Poke the syringe into the rubber and draw up the insulin in the pen. I use this size: 3/10 mL cc (doses up to 30units; 31 gauge, short needle 8mm - some people prefer long needles). Mine have 1/2u marks and are designed for U-100 insulins. It is important that you/she get U-100 syringes, and the half unit markings help tremendously for our old eyes!
