Lantus BG Curve Results

To be honest, I would want to have more information than a snapshot from one day. Did you do the curve or was the curve at the vet's office? If the curve was at the vet's office, the numbers may be artificially elevated due to the stress of Bay not being at home and all of the commotion at a vet's office.

- Are you home testing? If not, can we convince you to do so?
- What are you feeding Bay? We strongly encourage a low carb (less than 10% carb) diet -- preferably canned or raw food.
- Are you dosing insulin twice a day?
- When was Bay diagnosed?
- Does Bay have any medical issues and did your kitty every have problems with Ketoacidosis/ketones?

Thank you for responding. We are home testing 3-4 times a day. He is on Friskies Pate’ and he is free fed because he is so hungry. We give him a can twice a day, he also gets methyl b12 and potassium twice a day. He is on 1 unit of Lantus twice a day at 9am and 9pm. He was diagnosed in early December. The Vet started him on Vetsulin and Hills D/M. After joint FDMB we switched him to Lantus and Friskies Pate as everything I have read it is the best option to eventually reach remission. Some back story is the Vet we have seen is adamant about him being on Vetsulin and dry food because she is unfamiliar with Lantus and refuses to read the articles people have sent me on FDMB as well as others I have found online. She believes that the Lantus is causing his low potassium and causing the neuropathy, but he has had that when diagnosed but never addressed until I took him back because it had gotten worse. Unfortunately I don’t believe that keeping a spreadsheet will happen as he is my moms cat and honestly she is Diabetic herself and does not even maintain a log for herself.
Bay does not have any other medical issues other than low potassium. I got the Vet to send me the blood results from the tests he has had

Can you borrow the BG meter occasionally and copy the results into a spreadsheet? Without data on how low a dose is taking the cat, we are very reluctant to provide dosing suggestions.

Perhaps you could point out to your mom that when her blood glucose is running low, she knows what to do. Bay doesn't. The kitty can't adjust his own dose.
We are very sensitive to safety issues and hypoglycemia can be a very real safety issue. Having data will let us know if a dose increase or reduction is needed. If you don't think the vet is up to speed (and you've done your research and know what the answer is to that issue), then you need to have information you can pass along to us so we can help without putting Bay in jeopardy.
