Hi I have just recently purchased the Target brand glucometer that has a lancing pen with it. It seems very cheap and is very hard to use. It slightly jabs his ears but not enough to get adequate blood every time. I constantly have to take that top off and pull the needle up. I have adjusted the dial to go to the highest setting and still I have problems. Does anyone else use this brand? I am also curious if they sell higher quality lancing devices separately?

Have you ever tried just freehanding it? You don't have to put the lancet into a device at all. You can just hold it between your fingers and poke at a 45 degree angle. I've found it easier because I can really see where I'm poking

I have been free handing with Bananas' tests. I bought the Relion ultra thin lancets in the 30 gauge size. They were $3.94 at Walmart for 100. They are tiny, but do the job. Have gotten enough blood for my meter (Relion Micro) every time at 45 degree angle. I haven't used the pen, because I wanted to be sure where I was aiming for.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Accu-chek Multi-clix. They used to come with the Aviva meter. I couldn't find my main one and broke my spare this week and found that I really disliked every other kind I had in the house, bought the Fast-clix and didn't like that either. I haven't free handed in years and found I am pretty rusty. To get a new Multi-clix and it cost me a pretty penny, but I am hoping I have new one in the mail tomorrow. I find it very easy to control and it is quick so the cat doesn't need to stay still as long (one thing Sly really appreciated!). I also found it let a lot less marking on the cats' ears.

Not sure how to answer that other than to say "enough to poke a hole"...the lancets are very sharp so it really doesn't take a lot of pressure

I get a cosmetic pad and put it behind her ear (so I don't poke my finger) and then poke....sometimes I have to "milk" the ear a little to get it bleeding....as soon as I get my test in, I fold the cosmetic pad over and apply a little pressure to stop the bleeding and prevent bruising

Did your lancet come with a clear cap? I use the clear cap on my lancing device as it's designed for alternate site testing and goes a little deeper than if you use the adjustable cap. I have all the respect in the world for people who can freehand the lancet, I'm too chicken to try that lol. The clear cap works great, for me.

I just purchased a relion lancing device from Walmart. On the first try and the shallowest setting I was able to get enough blood to read. It was under $6 which is the best part! I may try free handing at some point but this is all very new to me (my Romeo was just diagnosed three weeks ago) thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

The lancets with larger diameter typically work best for cats. Human ones marked for alternate (alternate to the finger tips) are 25-28 gauge.
