Can you give any more information. Is anything at all being done in terms of treatment?

A low carb wet food is what most of us feed. When feeding this type of food it is best to learn to home test with an inexpensive human meter. You can get one at Walmart, Relion meters.

What did the vet say? Insulin? What kind and how much? Did he say anything about testing at home? We need this info to help you. In the meantime, Read as much as possible on this forum.

Yes, my vet wanted to get him on insulin asap as his sugar was 513 that day. He doesn't seem to be in any pain. I live on S.S. and not sure if I can afford treatment for him. My vet said he was really sick and gave him 6 days to 6 weeks. Can I get the special food at Walmart? Also could you give me est. prices on insulin and needles. Vet said he will need 2 shots a day.

If you are on a limited income then check out the links in this post to see if you can get some help http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/financial-help-links.131190/ Also check the supply closet page as often people have supplies to sell at low cost or give away. You don't need special food, a low carb commercial wet food is fine. Where are you located? People can help with the lists of foods if you let us know. What are you feeding at the moment?

You can get low carb canned food at Walmart. Many use Friskies Pate, 9 Lives Pate, Fancy Feast Classic and even Special Kitty Pate is fine. Just be sure to get only the Pate type and not the ones with gravy. Also to save money, pick up a Relion Glucose meter while you're there. The Confirm or Micro take less blood, and the Prime takes a bit more, but the strips are cheaper. With your own glucometer you will be able to keep your kitty safe and save money because you won't have to go to the vet for curves to measure his glucose. You may want to contact Diabetic Cats in Need (see the link Alexi provided above)They can help with insulin and meters as well.
