My cat has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes and he has EXTREME muscle loss. He is now on Insulin and is doing okay but I wanted to know if he will ever get his muscles back? confused_cat
Yes, when you find the right insulin dose for your cat he will regain weight and be like he was before.
Welcome. What is your name (first) and your cat's name.
What type insulin and what dose?
What are you feeding? Low-carb canned food is very desirable.
Are you testing the cat's blood sugar at home? Most caretakers in this forum test before each shot and sometime in between shots. A blood glucose meter for heuman works fine.
Yes. Untreated diabetes means they're basically starving to death. Once they're on insulin and the better regulated they become, the better their bodies are able to process food again and they should be able to bulk back up and regain all that was lost.
And depending on what you mean by muscle loss, are you seeing neuropathy as well? i.e. is he walking on his hocks? One thing that helps is supplementing methyl-b12 (Zobaline is the cat version).
Dusty was down to 5 lbs, from 10 lbs originally, basically a walking skeleton. At last check, 3 weeks ago, he was 8.8 lbs. I'm due to go back to Jo's and check him again. And, he is off insulin!
Allicat replied to my reply in a PM. Here it is. I PM's back on how to reply in the fourm

You replied to my post but I don't know how to respond back so I will just message you! My name is Alli and my cat's name is Hal. We use Lantus Insulin. He only gets two units at night and one in the morning. He was just diagnosed Tuesday. He's a good boy and I'm hoping he gets his muscle back soon, he looks rough but doesn't act like it. Do you have any recommendations for cat food/treats? What to give him, what not to? He is a big time treat eater so what kind of treat would he need to have that he would consider eating? confused_cat
This post lists low-carb food viewtopic.php?f=28&t=94685
Good low-carb treat are freeze-dried metts y can get at a pet store
It is important that you dose Lantus consistently - meaning giving the same dose am and pm. By changing the dose each cycle. HHave you had the chance to visit the Lantus forum and read the stickies over there concerning dosing protocol?
Also will you be home testing? Are you open and willing to learn how? It is the only way to know if it is safe to give insulin and the only way to manage the diabetes.
