Expected it to be high this morning--she started waking me up wanting to eat around 3 am--after an hour of trying to ignore her--I gave in and gave her 1/4 can LC FF. She was back in 30 minutes begging again. I didn't feed anymore until shot time.

I am starting to wonder if I am effecting her bg with her feeding. When her numbers are relatively low (never low) I feel comfortable feeding her more, so I do--but it seems her bg climbs. When her numbers are high--I feed less trying to pull them down and normally I do get some down swing.

She is a big eater and was before DM, and she needs to gain some weight--so it is hard not to feed her. She will easily eat 1.5 cans of food at two feedings (3 total) and another can throughout the day if I will allow.

Do you think I should cut back on her food?

Here's hoping for a lower pmps.

She was negative for ketones last night, peeing, pooping and eating well. She seems so much better, but I HATE the high numbers.

Thanks and I hope everyone has a good day!

The general rule- and of course there is that "every cat is different"- is that you feed more while they are unregulated. Their bodies don't process the food well so they aren't getting all the benefits that a non diabetic would from the same amount. It is also thought that feeding small frequent meals helps the pancreas and keeps the bg levels on a more even keel. It is true that usually with an unregulated diabetic, feeding will temporarily raise bg levels but the thinking is that the benefits out weight the temporary rise. The last benefit that a kitty who is hungry is stressed and stress raises bg levels.

So that is a very long winded way to say, if I were you, I would be feeding small frequent meals. The diabetes is keeping her skinny. I would feed the diabetes. Your numbers are not swinging wildly either way.

I'm trying to breathe!

If I was not testing, I would think she was much better--she acts so much more like herself. I am assuming the lower numbers she is getting during the day are doing her a lot of good and that these high numbers are short lived and happening at the end of the cycle. I need to test her more, but she and I both needed a break after last week. The DKA and the extremely high test numbers truly did a number on me. I feel better this week, realizing she isn't going to just roll over and die if her bg is high. It is difficult when you are new at this--- the numbers are so intimidating.

I am looking forward to talking to Kelly this weekend, hopefully she can give me some insight. I am so glad I found FDMB-- you people are Great. I wish I could share this resource with my vet, so she could share it with others---BUT, she thinks I'm overboard and crazy!!! "Quit testing, don't worry, just check ketones once a week, feed dry, feed DM,blah, blah, blah!"

You are absolutely right. I wish we could even out that steep learning curve that is the first few weeks of this thing. And you got DKA thrown into the mix!

We are all paying it forward for help we received when we were terrified. You will be able to do the same. Your experiences with a new diabetic and DKA and coming out okay will be invaluable to newbies who are facing the same.

I agree with Sue - feed Kitty when she is hungry, within reason :-D Oscar used to eat like 5 cans of FF a day before he got somewhat regulated

Your comment about your vet at the very end made me chuckle. Been there. Done that. ohmygod_smile

Kim, just know that you are a great momma to Kitty.

Many of us know all too well about a vet telling you you are crazy and doing too much, yada yada, yada. Been there done that got the t-shirt ;)

FBMB is a blessing we are all so lucky to have found. And we are all doing the best we can for our kitties ....and I am sure the kitties know this!

Keep on keepin on!
