Good Morning!

I took Kitty back to the vet yesterday and we discussed different treatment options. I went home and licked my wounds, got on the internet and have decided that I am ready to fight for Cool Kitty! She felt bad yesterday, but this morning, for whatever reason-- she seemed more alert and active. I really think the vet is missing something-- I think Kitty not only has kidney issues, but also a pancreatitis flare up. The vet seems to think it is all kidneys. But, while Kitty's kidney values are elevated and not good-- from my research they are not bad enough to be making her lethargic. She is very wobbly in her back legs and her potassium is low-- 3.9. The local vet did not feel like she needed potassium supplemented----BUT, she will start it tomorrow at my request (demand!). I have opted for not taking Kitty to the vet school at this time, but instead we are doing an online consult with them-- reviewing her past history and current bloodwork, this will allow us to consider and compare treatment options. I do not want a lot of excess tests run at this point. Kitty's is anemic-- her hct was 18.6 yesterday, so I am electing to start the epogen tomorrow. I realize there is risk of anitbodies developing, but after weighing the risk vs. rewards-- I am going for it! I have Kitty's best interest at heart and will do what I can to stabililize her and continue to give her a good quality of life. The course of action at the present time is--sub qs daily, epogen once a week-combined with injectable iron, phosphorus binders with her food, potassium supplemented and LOTS of LOVE! Yesterday, I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach....today, I am like...Bring it On! I know this will be a challenge and that the end result will not be favorable, but for now-- we are fighting!

Her BG this morning was 277- shot 3 units! I feel guilty testing her BGs-- due to the amemia, But there is NO way I am shooting her blind.

Chewy--- +129 103!
I am still monitoring him and hoping he decides to drop into double digits! He is a Wonderful Cat!

Wishing Everyone a Great Day from Kittyville.........Thanks for the support!

I know that when you put your mind to taking something on nothing will get in your way.

Chewy keeps inching closer to that green zone.

Well, first hurdle cleared!

I was told yesterday by my vet that the epogen would not be easy to get. She actually told me, that she had not used it or attempted to get any epogen for a couple of years, but that it was extremely hard to get then. I called around yesterday looking the drug and finally found it online. The online pharmacy assured me that I would have it today-- they would overnight it for Free! I came home today....and NO package! So, I called the pharmacy to ask where my Epogen was....."Oh, we are sorry..we are out of it!" I called the Vet and she had no idea where I could get it. I found it online again, but it would be next week before I could get it. It takes time for the epogen to work and I think we need it now! I called all the local pharmacies --Walgreens, CVSs, etc...."No, we do not carry it!" So, I called the hospital pharmacy and they said if my vet would call them they would consider dispensing it. I pulled every string I had and name dropped like crazy.....and actually kind of begged for it! I now have a small little vial of Epogen in my fridge!

I asked my vet why she had not used it in a couple of years, as I know Kitty is not the only anemic kidney cat their practice has seen in the last two years. She said, most owners just aren't willing to go to the expense or effort to help their cats....sad.

Like I said, I know it is an uphill battle, but we won today!

I knew nothing would be able to stop you. If I'm ever fighting an uphill battle I want you in my corner. :-D

Ding, score 1 for the K team (Kim & Kitty, get it?).

Kim, totally awesome!!! No experience with feline anemia or kidney problems, but my mom had both. You probably know this but, just in case, dialysis centers have epogen though I don't know which ones (if any) have their own dispensing pharmacies. My mom had anemia and, thus, low red blood cell count her entire life. Finally, a blood specialist stated that in her case this was simply normal - she was 82 at the time. Never had any childhood diseases and had a very strong heart. Her white blood count was usually much higher than other people's. I'm saying this to indicate that Kitty may have some factors in her own constitution that will help her fight all her serious conditions.

You probably have Kitty's food and water raised to a comfortable height for her, know to make sure never ever to let her get dehydrated (most important step so that her kidneys don't shut down), and to follow closely the number of neutrophills (sp.?) in her blood count. Not only because they indicate that she might be fighting an infection but also (according to my mom's immunologist) they're such an important part of the immune system. Keeping all of you in my prayers and thoughts.

I like this fighting Kim much better than the beaten one I spoke w/ last night. To coin an ancient Korean phrase - PIL-SUNG! NEVER say die! (don't give up the fight!).

Kitty's in it to win! She loves her life with you too much to let it go! And anyways, who better than her to keep that frisky little boy in his place???!!! ;-)

Go Chewy!!!

Good for you Kim. Keep up the good fight for Kitty. :-D
That's good to know about the epogen if I have to get some for Sid. I don't have any names to drop, but I can cry and beg so I think I have it covered.

Kim you are doing a great job for Miss Kitty! we fight because we love them .... Kitty is a lucky kitty! you are doing a great job!!
Nancy .....

Good for you! How long does that stuff last? Did you go ahead & order it from the place that said it would be a week? I have no idea what it is but why has it been in short supply for years?
