A cat that has been hanging around my parent's house had a litter of kittens about 3 weeks ago. Today I saw them in the yard for the first time. All of them have what appears to be an eye infection. A couple of them have one eye completely closed and green gunk around it.

I was able to catch two of them so I can take them to the vet in the morning. I still have one more to catch. I cleaned up their eyes with a warm wash cloth and can't tell if they are infected or they just have a kitten cold. After cleaning their eyes, they now have both open. However one of them sounds a little congested.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to make them feel better until I can get to the vet in the morning? They have already been feed and cleaned. They are now asleep in the carrier.

If congested, a little time in the bathroom with a hot shower running acts like a humidifier for a baby does and can help with congestion

You did right by cleaning them up the way you did. We used to have a bunch of kitties when we lived on the farm and this happened quite a lot. There's an inexpensive eye ointment you can get from a vet or a farm supply store. It usually only takes a few applications to clear it up. The respitory stuff could be distemper, that's really common of stray or feral babies. Of the cats on our farm, if I could catch them, they were spayed or neutered, but sometimes one slipped thru the cracks.

Of my 6 cats, I nursed 3 of them thru distemper, it's horrible. Goof was so near death at one point, that his tongue came out, is head fell back, and he started to pee, but I freaked out and started briskly patting and rubbing on his belly and his chest, pleading with him not to die. After about 10-15 seconds his head came up and his claws came out grabbing my hand. I was never so happy to have a kittens claws dig into my skin!

This morning they are doing better. There was still a little crud around their eyes. Once they were cleaned, they opened them up and I fed them. Both appear to be little girls. The tabby is the one that sounds congested. She is the adventurous one and wants to explore the world, or at least the bathroom. :cat: I have named her Amelia.

The grey one is so sweet. All she wants to do is snuggle. Her name is Cuddles.

I am going to call the vet when they open to see if I can get them in today or at least drop them off so they can work them in. Hopefully it is just a kitty cold. This weekend I will catch the third one.

Fingers and paws crossed for the babies, hope there's nothing serious going on with these little sweeties.

They went to the vet today. They have an upper respitory infection. They are now on Clavemox and an ointment for the eyes. I have 2 girls and a boy. The tabby & the light grey tabby are girls and the solid grey one is the boy. I did not realize how much bigger than his sisters he is until Amelia sat next to him. The boy is Cuddles, the tabby is Amelia and the light grey tabby is Misty. Cuddles weighs just over a pound, Amelia is 6 oz & Misty is 8 oz. Other than the URI, everything else looks good.

Have you had any luck catching the mom? I hope she's ok too and doesn't get mastitis from a sudden separation.

Not yet. I did not realize she could develop mastitis. I will try to catch her this weekend. Maybe if she is reunited with her kittens I can also get her socialized so she can be adopted

If you manage to get her, palpate her mammaries to make sure they aren't hard. Check for redness, lethargy, or any other indication that she isn't feeling well. If she has it she'll likely need antibiotics and for the kittens to nurse tons.

That may be easier said than done. Even though I can get her to come close to me, she does not like to be touched.

Ah she's one of those. Then I would aim for trap and get kittens to nurse asap. Unless you think there's a chance that there are more kittens she hasn't revealed.

Still no luck catching mom. The kittens are doing great. I have been able to get all of them to start drinking the KMR out of a bowl. Today I mixed a little canned food with KMR and they ate it all. Much easier than bottle feeding them.

The got a bath Friday and OMG, the water in the pans was so red after I finished bathing them. They were covered in fleas. Poor babies. The are feeling much better now. The eyes have almost cleared up and they are breathing a lot better. Not as congested as they were a couple days ago.

Cuddles was renamed. He is as adventurous as Amelia so he is now Marco Polo.

Here is are pics of the kittens. Amelia and Emily were not being very cooperative about having their pictures taken. Even though it is hard to tell it the picture, Misty's coat is a lighter gray than Marco with a silvery undercoat.

They will be ready for adoption in about 3-4 weeks. Any takers? Here is a little bit about their personalities.

Amelia loves to be held and petted. She loves playing with fingers, her toys and Marco & Misty.
Misty prefers playing with her brother and sister. When I am holding her to give her the meds, she keeps trying to get down to get back into the crate. She thinks she is missing all of the fun that Marco and Amelia are having.
Marco is another cuddle bug that loves to be held and petted. His favorite toys are my fingers and a chasing the furry cat toy wand.

They would all love to come home with you. :cat: I am offering a 3 for 1 special...

I wish!! They are all precious and it's amazing that they are so well socialized! Good luck finding homes and catching mama. If nothing else, your local SPCA may have a spay program for feral cats that are not going to be adoptable.

First Coast No More Homeless Pets currently has a grant for free spay/neuter for litters including momma. So far she and daddy have avoided the traps. They lay either on them or next to them. The traps are covered. Need to find something new to entice them into the traps. I am also going to check the Humane Society to see if I can get them into their foster program. I can continue fostering them, I just want to get them into a rescue so they can be exposed to future adopters.

We caught momma!! :woot::woot: Daddy is laying on top of the trap and won't leave her. My sister is going to see if she can convince him to go into the other trap.

I am going out of town this weekend and since I have a friend coming over to take care of the cats, I am going to have my dad drop her off at FCNMHP to be spayed. Since she is going in as a feral, she probably will not be ready to pick up until Sunday or Monday. Then I will reunite her with her kittens and work on socializing her.

Nice work!

I know this doesn't help because I'm not in position to adopt, but Marco, . Love him!

Shhh, no one tell JuJu.

Enjoy your weekend trip. :)

Momma has been fixed and will be ready to pick up this afternoon. I asked them to run the FeLV/FIV test on her. Hopefully she is negative.

You are never going to believe what happened yesterday. I was out of town this weekend. When I returned and almost to the kennel to pick up my dog, when I turned on their street, there was a kitten walking down the middle of the lane. Fortunately I missed it. Unfortunately (at least for me) I now have another kitten. He is about the same age as the other kittens and has been named Richie for the street he was found on, Richard Street.

So now the adoption deal has become better for everyone. I am offering a 4 for 1 special. The only cost is to promise to love and spoil them. :bighug::cat::bighug::cat:

Those kittens are adorable! So glad you caught Mama, now if you could only catch Mr. Papa Tomcat and get him neutered...he's no doubt out there spreading his genes. My dream is that all ferals can be caught and neutered/spayed, but I know it's only a dream. Too many people still heartlessly abandon unwanted kitties, shame on them!

Bless you for taking in these kittens and their Mama, I hope you find wonderful homes for these precious angels.

Lysine is great for aiding in recovery from URIs and future occurences. Amazon sells some good products including gels (Viralys), chews and powders. Some items you purchase also help support this wonderful forum. Cute kitties!

I know. I use that for my adult cats. But since these were about 3 weeks old when I grabbed them, I was not sure of the dose for kittens this small. The eye meds and antibiotics have helped everything clear up.

I picked up momma today and she is getting settled in. The kittens are still in the crate, but they are all in the same room. So far she appears to be indifferent about them. She did let me pet her a few times, but that was only because she had her face buried in her bowl of food.

It is a good thing that we caught her when we did. She was already in heat and hanging around her boyfriend. We are still trying to catch him.

My sister named her Mona. You can't tell it in this pic, but her eyes are bright blue. The kittens are in the crate next to her.

If anyone wants a super sweet siamese, Mona is available. I forgot to mention that the FIV\FeLV test was negative.

I did not think that she would be difficult to work with, but she is better than I even thought she would be. This morning, not only was I able to pet her, she also let me pick her up. But the best part is that when I held my hand down to her, she gave me headbutts. :joyful: :joyful: :joyful: Lots of headbutts and rubbing against my legs.

Have you checked with Siamese Rescue?
Not yet. One of my best friends does a lot of transports for them and I am going to ask her to see if she can get her on their adoption list.

Last night all of the kittens were out of the crate and they had a blast. I wish I could bottle their energy. Mona also was playing with them.
