Kitten Is OTJ!

It's been 14 days since my boy has had any juice and this morning his BG was 86.

I'm sure that since his diabetes was steroid induced, he had an easier remission than most. He, along with our other kitties, will be on a low carb/high protein diet for good.

If there's one thing I've taken away from this experience is if your cat is on dry food, get him/her off of it. Now! Not just diabetic ones but ALL of your kitties. Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need carbs.

Also, home test. Learn how to. I did and if I can, ANYBODY can! Home testing can save your sugarcat from possibly going hypo. Even though Kitten is OTJ, I will be testing him once or twice a week.

To the people that helped SO much at the beginning, Deb & Wink, Wendy & Tigger, BJM, and many others, I can't say enough good things about you. The compassion and reassurances you provided were beautiful to behold. As a newbie being thrown into the deep end of feline diabetes, you all were a life raft and a beacon of hope. I cannot imagine having gone through this without you. It will never be forgotten.

I am right there beside you on your soapbox only I am not going to ever get off of it. I totally agree that we need to get all kitties off dry food and if you are not into a raw diet - a low carb, grain-free wet diet is a must. I have even set my soapbox up on Catster to try to inform people who are asking questions about diet. Thank you for carrying this message on the tail of your successful OTJ!!

tips to keep Kitten OTJ

1.. obvious.. no dry food ever - and if you ever think about a new type of canned - be 100% sure its low carb
2 - check his blood once a week to watch for issues
3 - weigh him once every couple of weeks
4 - be careful of meds from the vet. Remind the vet that Kitten is a diet controlled diabetic - so no oral sugar in meds and no steroids
5 - watch the pee patch size, eating and drinking amounts
6 - regular vet checkups and watch for infection ie urinary tract, dental/teeth, ear etc

I currently have them on a home made cooked diet using a supplement slurry. They were not interested in raw, so I'm going cooked right now and will be slowly converting them to raw. I have to say since getting them off the dry junk and onto all wet, their coats are all so much silky and softer.

Those silky softer coats could be from having the extra water from the canned food.

Yes, it's why we keep trying to 'convert' people to a species appropriate diet, be it dry or wet, carbs have no place in a cat's diet. Better nutrition, one cat at a time. Or an entire cat family when there is a horde in the house.
