hi, Baby and Sadi are typically on Raw and Wellness… But Sadi turned 15 - 2 days ago & Baby will be 15 in March .. it can get very expensive to feed exclusively… So I emailed Friskies today to see if they have any plans to bring the special diet back (I've never fed it). They said no but did reply with this message ... anybody have any experience with pro plan urinary tract formulas? I am looking for low phosphorus for Sadi (I know Baby cannot have it because she's Diabetic)

Their reply:

Hi, thanks for the message. We're so sorry to say that we don't have any plans to bring back Special Diet. We'd like to recommend our Pro Plan - Focus - Urinary Tract Health Formulas. They're formulated to help maintain a healthy urinary tract system by providing low dietary magnesium. We'd also like to mention that our Pro Plan products are only available in pet specialty stores, such as PetSmart and PetCo. You can learn more by visiting http://puri.na/1M5tB1B. We'd be happy to mail you some coupons to give it a try. Please reply to this message with your full name and mailing address so we may do so. We hope to hear from you soon!

You need to be careful with Urinary Tract formulated foods. If the PH is adjusted too much for cats who get crystals then it can be harmful to cats with kidney disease. Food with the PH adjusted for cats prone to crystals can increase the risk of acidosis in kidney cats.

I ripped into them for sending out that recommendation without finding out the reason cats were being fed SD when I got it back when they removed SD from the shelves and their sales pitch was that it had the right PH formulation for urinary tract health. With a kidney cat you aren't working on lower urinary tract health, you are working on lowering the work on, and risk to, the kidneys.

I had Focus on my shelves for feeding the boys (crystals terrify me), but stopped buying it after reading it could be dangerous to kidney cats so there wouldn't be any mixups and have hubby feeding it to one of our kidney girls.

Getting a binder when phosphorus becomes an issue is the best way to deal with it. Pretty cheap and you can feed what the cat is used to.
