Ketosis

Some cats will have breath which smells like nail polish remover, especially if it is severe.

If you think that is a possibility, please take your cat to the vet.

DKA is one of those things you really don't want to play around with. What makes you think it is DKA? Some cats eyes get glassy .... my Payne gets all big eyed and you swear you could ice skate on her eyes. Most cats don't want to eat but drink more and of course the whole reason this play is put on, ketones.

If you suspect symptoms of DKA you MUST know what the ketones are. Any pharmacy sells ketostix, dip in urine and it will tell you where you are. No ketones and there will be NO DKA. But if you have ketones that is your building block, sort of. The more ketones, the more likely DKA will happen it just takes ONE more thing .... cat not eating, infection, high BG #s, anything else.

You want to stay away from DKA. Not only does it almost kill the kitty but the cost is enormous! Here in CA the cost runs about $6,000. You need to test for ketones or take into the vet if you suspect.

Nothing made me feel that he had ketosis...I only asked so that I would Know the symptoms (I am a three week newbie here)

I caught him in the litter box last night and got a urine sample....I grabbed one of the test strips (caught his urine from his stream of urine) and the result on the stick was negative....there was no change of color on the strip :-D

Oh good.

We were concerned (obviously!) um ... perhaps let us know that it is a question for reference, not a suspicion next time?
