Wanted to share a short funny story here because we all need to laugh a little when dealing with all the stress of our diabetic kitties –

So off the advice I received from this board, and especially since my kitty is recovering from DKA, I bought some ketone strips to test Ozzy’s urine. When I brought the bottle home from the store and looked at the strips, I was thinking….how on earth am I going to get my kitty to pee on this? It’s not like I am just going to walk over to his kitty box and stick it under his bum while he is peeing and catch the urine that way. That would be too easy and unrealistic, right??? Then I thought…what the heck- let’s see what happens. I took the lid off the kitty box, put Ozzy in the box and SURPRISE…he literally starts peeing and right on the stick! I swear to you this really happened!! He even turned around so his bum was near me so I could get a good angle. I didn’t even get a drop on my hand. Hubby and I laughed so hard and I am still chuckling a little now as I write this!

And the best part is…Ozzy was negative for ketones! YAY!

My kitty is friggen awesome! :cat:

I am rolling with laughter at ur story :joyful::joyful::joyful:. My Elmo does me the great courtesy of balancing on the litter box edge( which he has always done and we've always remarked about)...makes it so easy to put the stick in the lovely stream of yellow and do the ketone check...so much easier than other methods :)

And we experienced DKA early on with Elmo back in July. Scary stuff, for sure ! Because of that I am probably a bit OCD about catching a sample every day...he doesn't even look back at me anymore...just figures I have a new weird hobby, perhaps.

Teasel kindly allows me to slip a long-handled kitchen spoon (no longer in kitchen use!) under his bum to catch a few drops. Very considerate of him. :)

Great to hear you sounding brighter, Joanna! Thanks for sharing your first venture into the dark and dingy world of ketone monitoring. :)

Ozzy isn't awesome; he's friggen pawsome!
