Ketone meters are better, although more expensive. They detect ketones in the blood.
Urine ketones may not show up for as much as 5 days after they appear in the blood.
If your cat has ever had ketones, we recommend the blood ketone meter. Then regularly test with the urine strips (less expensive) and confirm any positive tests with the blood meter (more expensive)

And once ketones start showing up in the urine, a cat can potentially go into DKA very quickly hence the board recommendation that anything other than trace ketones is a call to get kitty to the vet - rapid fashion.

Thanks. So far he never had ketones. I need to start testing though
 
It does increase peace of mind. If you choose to monitor urine instead of blood ketones, try using Multistix analysis strips (or similar 10-test strips). It can provide a lot of useful trend info (urine specific gravity, protein, and pH levels being particularly useful).
 
Or KeEtonDiaStix or generic which do both ketones and glucose.
