Hi,I just was able to test my cats(benny) urine with the keto-diastix for the first time .I fed him about 5:30 pm then gave him his injection of lantus(1 unit)about 6:30 pm.Around 7:35 pm I tested his urine puddle 3 times(three strips).
The test showed negative to slightly for ketones I would lean towards neg. but Bennys glucose was at the maximum scale color it says 2000mg/dL.Can someone help me out with these readings. This is the first time using the test strips. its impossible for me so far to get a blood sample even when using treats.

Urine glucose will always be much higher than blood glucose. Glucose builds up in the urine over time and by the time the urine is expelled, it will have a lot of glucose in it. it's not an accurate way of monitoring blood gluocse levels. A blood glucose test tells you what the level is right that very moment.

Keep trying to hometest. It's frustrating to learn and figure out what method works best for you and your cat but don't give up  Have you seen the testing videos and tips?

Hi,I have tried all different ways to test my cat(benny).Got great advice from other members and nothing seems to work.I live by myself so I dont have any one to help when i try to home test.Benny just will have no part of it .I didnt give up but, now when I attempt to test benny he gets really nasty.

Tomorrow go to amazon.com & buy the Purina Glucotest urine detection system which I used to monitor my cat Moonie for many months--It is packages of small squares that you use in the scoopable litter--The squares go into LB, cat urinates on them, they change color, & that color corresponds to a urine glucose number--ie: 150 --Just remember that urine glucose testing is delayed because it takes approx. 3 hrs for the urine to collect in the bladder--so it is not accurate for that particular exact time, but if you check twice a day, it will give you a reading--Just sprinkle the squares around, so you can read them for a couple of days(can stay in LB & be read for up to a week)--Call the company for ketodiastix & ask them to explain-
Normal blood sugar readings are 60-120-
Check out this website for meanings of these:http://www.petdiabetes.com/pdorg/urine.html

I think 2000 is a high reading--He just got his first shot right??--Take a reading in the am & see if it went down--It should have--Keep in touch..The Glucotest works pretty well, but is costly, I didnt care at that point---Good luck! Roni and Moonie

Thank You Roni,I will look into the LB testing squares. My posts as of recent sound some what negative but I have taken My cat Benny to 3 different vets in 13 months since he was diagnosed 12/4/10.I have spent around $3800.00 or more.I'm really getting discouraged when it comes to home testing it has been impossible benny just freaks out.Now he is so leary of me.. just wanting to pet him sometimes .Its very heart wrenching to see my cat go thru this with his illness. The past couple of days and especially yesterday he was barely able to function normally.
