Kax - 31 now 106

Gone from 31 to 40 now we are at 55. He's eating anything in site. I'll keep feeding him every 30 mins for next couple hours but I am hoping we are ok as I did have to rub honey on his gums and the Ketone monitor decides to stop working tonight.

Thanks for your help.

Here’s some further information from the Sticky - Don't Panic! or How to Handle Low Numbers

If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)
  • Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
  • Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
  • Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
  • Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
  • Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
You’re doing great!

Thanks appreciate the help. We have not had a scare like this since he was first diagnosed three years ago. That time he spent over a week in the hospital.

I am very careful with him. He recently got diagnosed with kidney (early stage) disease and started taking Porus One about 20 days ago and this for some reason has been messing with the blood glucose. If I lower his insulin then he will spike for a couple days and then drop to about 60. Today he dropped to 30. He was delirious and it is worrying but not sure how to fix this at present.

Think the worst is behind us. Waiting for the effects of the honey to wear off and this happened before his evening insulin shot so hes had none tonight so pretty sure we are ok now.

You are a very good and smart, level-headed cat mom, Claire. I understand how scary a hypo is, having gone through it once many years ago now, with my first sugar cat.

You did brilliantly. Be sure to get some dosage advice from the knowledgeable people here, as maybe somebody knows more about Porus One, and can help with the CKD.

Best wishes to you both, and a calm and restful night ahead.

I got it
You are correct about spreadsheet afraid its been a bad year for me and my family.

March and April I was in UK as Mum in hospital 96

Came back for about month (have those numbers) then back to UK for another 6 weeks

September I hurt my back and ended up in hospital for two weeks. Now two back procedures later. Managed to keep my boys at the house during the back issues with a cat sitter coming in and Libra buttons for most of it. While I was in UK lady used her phone with buttons so have no readings.

I do however monitor extremely closely. As I said 2 days out of second back procedure tonight was extremely difficult for me. Have another cat that had a seizure yesterday so its been a bit hectic last two days.

I was planning on posting numbers again starting in Jan when I returned from UK as I am flying back there in 2-3 weeks for a month.

Again Kaz has been monitored very carefully and the vat sitter is a vet technician he has been in good hands.

I'm glad this seems to have a happy ending. Please reduce the dose 0.25 units as suggested.

One other favour to ask, could you update the subject line to show his latest numbers. We all get anxious if we see a subject line with 31 and no subsequent numbers to show he's out of danger now.

Hi Claire, I'm so glad you caught that low and were able to get him up! I know that was so scary. It sounds like you have so much going on personally but that you are doing your very best for Kaz and your other pets. When they begin having multiple issues that require treatments (e.g., Porous One) that seem to present conflicting results, things can get really complicated and frustrating. Hang in there!!
