How long does it take a diabetic symptomatic cat to have a blood test that supports a diabetes diagnosis?

I ask this beause, My Kitty has shown symptoms for 10 months--but just had blood work supporting diabetes last week. I have taken her to the Vet for blood test during the last 10 months and never had a "diabetic" reading. Can diabetes have a sudden onset?

Thanks!

Did your vet run fructosamene tests or was it a simple blood glucose level?

Was your cat checked for hyperthyroidism or kidney disease. I'm sure there are other diseases that have some of the same symptoms as FD, but those two are the ones I can think of right now that can look like FD. Increased drinking, peeing and vomitting symptoms.

My Vet did a simple Glucose test.

Kitty's Kidney and Thyroid numbers were okay. In fact the only value that was high was the Glucose---435. I take her back tomorrow for more testing--she has been on a low carb diet for a week. I wonder what impact the low carb diet will have?

How quick can the low carb diet drop the Glucose level?

Thanks for your help.

ECID - every cat is different.

Two of my recently adopted diabetics went into remission very fast at my house, and a few have not. My most recent adopted FD, Kiki is still insulin dependent and may remain that way.

Are you seeing any positive changes in your cat overall since changing the diet?

At some point, when you're ready, you could hometest your kitty, even if at the vet she shows as not FD anymore, it may be good to learn because if she shows symptoms in the future you could check her quickly and then get her into the vet for a check up.

I think I am seeing positive changes--she is not urinating or drinking as much. If she had not lost, or was not losing weight--I think I could handle it. It is just hard to see her skinny. I really hope my Vet and I can get this under control and she can put some weight on.

Thanks for the response. I am really anxious about the Vet visit tomorrow.

We can't diagnose diabetes based on a single spot test, so please ask your vet to run a Fructosamine, which will give him the average BG of the past couple of weeks. It will rule out a spike of high blood glucose from stress.

When you say he has shown symptoms for 10 months, do you know what his BG tested at during that time? Some vets accept a higher BG as normal, so it may have been missed in the early stages.
