My cat Apollo got diagnosed with diabetes on Sept 29.. We started Lantus insulin on the 30th at 1 unit twice a day. After a week, he went to the for a glucose curve, and they upped the insulin to a 1.5 unit. After another week, he went back and got upped again.. Long story short, with in the last month, his insulin has been raised to 3.5 units twice a day.
I also started home monitoring two weeks ago, I test, feed, and give him his shot at 8 am and pm. I also test every 2 hrs during the day when possible. Over the last two weeks of testing, the lowest number we got down to was 104, and after that it shot back up. There was another day that it got down to 116, but then again shot back up. Every morning and every evening when it is time for his shot, he is up to 400-600. After taking the results of the home testing to the vet yesterday, she said that she doesn't want to raise his insulin dose any higher because it is sometimes below 150. So she decided the insulin needed to be changed.
Today we started out at 1 unit twice a day of novolin, I tested before his shot this morning and it was too high for my meter to read (over 600). 2 hours after it was down to 385, 4 hours post shot it was at 401, 6 hours post shot we are back to unreadable (over 600) on my meter. I know, he has only had one dose of the new insulin, but at least with the lantus there were times that it got down to where it should be, and he was starting to feel better.
I'm just feeling defeated today, I felt like I was making headway, and now I'm starting over from scratch. And he doesn't feel good today. Just wanted some other insights or stories from others that have gone through with a similar situation.
Thank you!
