Just happily going up and down with Joe

Do you have to dig your way out of your driveway? Where are you Smorg?
To answer your question from before, I live in California now. I lived in the Midwest my whole life, until last year. You have to throw salt down at the first hint of inclement weather in the winter there. Then you have to shovel your walk and driveway before it ices over.
And if you don't have a garage, you have to warm up your car and scrape the ice and snow off. Can you imagine? It was an adventure to leave the house from November to March.

So at least your winter is easier than that! What's the average low in winter in GA, like 45?

My winters now are harder then they have always been because I am in Georgia. Born and raised in Burbank California and we barely see winter there.
The average low in Georgia is about what you stated. Long hot summers and short winters. I would almost prefer the opposite as the summers are so miserably full of humidity and bugs

Winter does not exist in Burbank. And no humidity, or really any bugs. Oh man, the mosquitos are the worst.

Oh my gosh. It is never-ending. Joe jumped from 110 (+5) to 370 (+9) in four hours. He did have a small meal after his +5 test. Aside from that he had some Bonito flakes and (this is the culprit) some of the air-dried food from Ziwi Pets. I checked this site a few days and looked at the canned food analysis and determined it was low. Then I ordered from Chewy and ordered a bag of air-dried thinking it was also low. After this spike, I went and checked it and it is 4% carbs. I guess this is a no-no as I was told to stay under 2%?? I think??

Do

Do you know Burbank Smorg? I miss it so much.

I do! We spent January through June there last year. Well technically 3 blocks into North Hollywood, at my SIL's. But I would go to Burbank every day. Sprouts Health Market, Costco, the best bagel place, car wash, etc. AND the hardest hike ever. Wildwood Canyon.
We were there in the start of covid. It was quite the shock to be in LA for that, as opposed to our small town of 10,000 in Iowa.
I remember driving down Burbank Blvd in March, and it was a ghost town. NO traffic. 8am, and I was just about the only car on the road.
Views from the top of the hard part of the Wildwood hike. Do you remember what it was called?

And this is Templeton's version of hiking. He loves to scramble up hills and drag us behind him. It was steeper than it looks and dad could barely follow :D

Nope, you did good! He's just bouncing around as his body gets used to being in normal numbers again. 4% is just great. 10% or under is where we want to be.
I'm actually working on trying to get his carbs up a little bit from 2-4%. I'd like them to be at around mouse carbs, which I believe is 7% ;)

"Keep in mind that the numbers on the chart are VERY loose so don't get neurotic about whether a food says 7% carb or 10% carb because they are virtually the same number. Due to the way carbs are figured, a food that states 10% carb content could even be 0% or 2%. Food compositon numbers are just not that accurate."

Here's an interesting thread about carb percentages and how the effect each cat differently:

My family home was right off of Burbank Blvd. Childhood home where I grew up. Burbank is a magical place. A place I wanted to escape as a teenager ("don't go into Burbank if you are partying as there are cops all over" was a common sentence) But it is now a Yuppie place, a mixture of quaint hometown charm and progressive idealism. It is actually against the law to park your car on your lawn in Burbank. The schools are top-rated. It is inside L.A. county but a city of its own. Own police force and fire dept. Own city government. And right over the hill from Hollywood. I miss it so. I came to Georgia because I missed my daughter and my grandchildren but I will never get over leaving. It is a whole different culture.
NoHo was under renovation when I last lived there 2016-2019. We would always go to NoHo to take the train to Hollywood.
The trail you speak of is Vital. VTL is what the locals call it. It is legendary and goes up to the Verdugo mountains, so much wildlife and mountain lions!

I cannot wait to tell him. This will make him very happy as he loved the stuff!

PS there are many trails in Wildwood Canyon. Vital is the most famous. But there are others including one just called Wildwood trail. I have hiked them all but not in 20+ years

It is indeed very hometown in places. Funny law. Keeping people in line. I remember in March when LA mandated masks, Burbank didn’t and I found that curious. Some locals in the grocery store told me Burbank is its own city with own regulations. It was news to me. Explains why it’s so much nicer than the surrounding area. NoHo is still scary in parts. Specifically under the overpasses and especially next to the train station. Tent cities. So sad. Maybe you can take a trip to Burbank with your daughter when things get back to normal.
Vital sounds familiar. Amazing trail so close to city life.

So many trails! Wish I could have done more of them. You sure grew up in an awesome place. Do you remember the one street that is lined with palm trees as far as the eye can see? It's right at the base of the mountains.

Also, great job catching that 68 at +6. He's doing so well on this dose.
I've been meaning to ask, do you make sure to not let him have food two hours prior to his pre shot test?

yes, I am careful he does not have food 2 hours prior to pre-shot. I was doing that, withholding food 2 hours prior to any testing but someone, maybe you, told me it was only important to withhold before the pre-shots
Smorg, do I drop Joe .25 based on his low number of 68 today?

Perfect. Just checking because of his higher pre-shot numbers. Yup, only important to withhold before the pre-shots.

Hmm. Well, honestly, you don't have to. It depends on your ability to monitor and your comfort level. Once enough data is had, often people amend their "reduction point" lower.
If it were me, I'd keep him at this dose. BUT that's me getting a billion tests.
If you can't give him any tests after PM +2, then for safety you should lower tonight.

HA. I know all streets in Burbank as I have gone back home to live many times and my mom lived there all my life. If I was not living there I was visiting there. As far as the streets lined with palm trees, there are so many. You might be thinking of Sunset Canyon, Bel Air DR, or Kenneth Rd. All of these run parallel to the mountains. Olive ave runs down from the mountains and has a ton of palm trees

I am not sure about my ability to test past +2. Sounds good now but when the clock hits 10pm, I might feel differently. I had a handyman here all day and did not get a snooze in.

I completely understand. Sometimes the tired just hits you like a truck.

I know I said he's doing so well so fast, but also, it will get harder at night as he gets better. You'll find many nights will need +3, +4, etc.

Check out some spreadsheets here to get an idea of how many PM tests people get? I found that help me get a handle on it when I started posting in July.

You can lower tonight, but regardless, he will need more nighttime monitoring going forward as his numbers get lower.

I better do better with napping then. I do not think about doing it most of the time but I am going to have to plan ahead a little better. I gave a fat 3. I did not get your tag. I am going to go look for them now

So while the freeze dried kibble is low enough carbs it is pretty high in Phosphorus at 1.54%. He is back to only having a few a couple of times a week and too bad because he loved them.
Smorg someone in my Burbank FB group sent me a picture of Bel Air dr. and the palm trees

Found them! Boy Templeton sure is a stunner. Your SS looks pretty darn good Smorg.
Thanks Susan :)
And yeah, we've come into better numbers in the last two weeks. Patience is key.
Fat 3, ok, let's see what Joe does with that!
Maybe the Freeze dried Ziwi is ok sparingly, yeah.

Yes, that looks very familiar. It was so stunning, I stopped and took photos. I'll have to find them.
