Hi Folks,

Had a chat with my vet yesterday evening. She mentioned that that day she had seen a diabetic cat officially in remission. She was amazed as it was 20 YEAR OLD and had had diabetes for 5 years!! Previously she had told me that I had 4 months to get my cat Alice into remission. Today she said 'We can NEVER give up'! This particular cat has other health problems including serious renal problems which is sad but as she said, at 20 years of age, most cats would have some problem. She tested this cat 2 consecutive months, no insulin, no diabetes! I hope this will encourage someone who might feel it may never happen

That's great! I feel like such a failure because we're past 6 months since Heff's diagnosis and I'm lucky to have good numbers a few days in a row. It's frustrating, but good to know there's hope for remission still!

thank u! this is encouraging. i had hoped to get larry otj soon, and its now been 4 months since dx. i guess theres still hope. :)

No one should every feel that they are a failure! If you are treating your cat's diabetes you are a winner. Failure is giving up, not being unable to achieve remission. Remission is a great goal, but diabetes is a disease with many possible causes. Diabetes does not follow rules.

Yes, I agree - of course you are not a failure! I totally understand your frustration re the erratic numbers though, Alice is the same. As the vet said though - it shows we must NEVER give up! This particular cat was 20 years old and not in the best of health otherwise if she/he can do it then we are all in for a chance! Heff's probably having a reasonable time meanwhile, with lots of love and fuss! He obviously has a caring Momma. There are folks out there that just would not have time for this. I wish Heff and all the lovely kitties here the very best.
