Merlin's Mum

Yesterday, My cat Merlin was diagnosed. It was a shock!I am happy that I found this site. It has given me insite and hope. I am trying not to stress about it and i hope that in a couploe of weeks he will back to his normal self. How long does it t ake for them to get back to their self?

That is one of those question that falls under Every cat is different. Some respond very quickly, others take awhile. There is really no way of knowing until you start treating with insulin and testing them at home. I have two adopted diabetics, Maxwell with diet change alone and 2 weeks on a low dose of Lantus went into remission (off insulin) and has been there ever since (going on 9 months now). Musette I just adopted and she is still a work in progress. It really kinds of depends on how quickly they are diagnoised, and if there are underlying health problems, infections, bad teeth etc.

Some of the things you can do that will help Merlin along that path to good health, is change his diet to low carb/high protein and we have lots of options to do that and not break the bank.

Learn to test him at home, as most cats are under stress at the vet's and stress raises blood sugar. This also not only gives you truer numbers but keeps money in your wallet, and keeps him safe while on insulin....We can teach you how to do it

And ask your vet o start him on a nice gentle long lasting insulin..the 3 that are the best are Lantus, Levermir, and PZI.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with links to get you started. Normally I would, but Musette has decided to throw me a curve ball this morning (see I told you she is a work in progress.. )

But I did want to pop in and welcome you to the best place you never wanted to be, but are so blessed to have found.

Welcome! How old is your cat? Mine is almost 6 (birthday is in September) and the only odd thing I noticed about him was his water intake during march - early April. We moved into a house I bought on 4/14 and a week later were at the vet for the annual check up when I told them about his excessive drinking. The next day he was diagnosed and after a change in diet, a little more exercise, and a month of insulin injections (lantus), he went into remission.

i have to agree with you about the FD.com site. It really helped me and while my vet prescribed Lantus to get Cedric into remission, he didn't think it was going to happen that quick. Things I learned here, such as injecting on the side of the abdomen instead of the scruff, may have attributed to the quickness. And the removeal of the dry food , that was pounded into me, but was 100% correct.

Again, welcome!

Welcome "mom", and merlin,
Impossible to give you an easy or quick answer. Depends on too many things. How high were his bg readings when diagnosed, are there other conditions present, what plan of action does your vet have in mind? His diet from this day forward is key. He needs to be eating an all canned low carb diet and no dry food.ever again. The type of insulin and whether you plan on home testing and treating are huge factors. He could be cured by just a diet change. Or he could take a few months to get him into remission. Some kitties never get fully "cured", but can have a lot more yeas of happy life ahead of them.
My Bob was nearly lost at the time I found out he had DB. His BG was over 500, and he was also DKA. He was put on PZI and went to a low carb wer diet. His insulin intake went as high as 7 units a day. Two months later he is a reborn cat getting at most one unit daily and is really close to " off the juice".
Please tell us more. There are at least dozens of members here waiting for more details so we can try to help.
