Hi -
My 12 year old b/w cat has just been diagnosed and a friend shared this board with me --
The vet is a wonderful vet - and we will be meeting this week to discuss treatment.
Right now -- Mac is doing pretty well but his back legs are very weak and he is having accidents around my small apartment.
He is eating well....cleaning himself.....moving slowly. He purred this morning and meowed with me a bit. But you can tell he just doesn't feel well.

I am heading out right now to buy another litter box - so there will be one readily available in each of the 2 rooms he frequents.
Just a bit in shock -- wondering exactly where to go from here....
Again - thank you for being here.
Jen

Hi and welcome

Just quickly whilst you are on your way out to get a new little box you might want to pick up a home testing kit to test your cats blood glucose at home. It is the best way to keep your kitty safe.

Have a look at this thread for ideas about meters:

And this one

You may also like to pick up some ketostix to test your kitty for diabetic ketoacidosis. You can put the test strip in the flow of urine as they are going in there box.

Welcome to FDMB.

The weakness in the hind legs could be diabetic neuropathy, a consequence of uncontrolled glucose levels. Glucose control with insulin will help restore that to normal functioning. Also, methylcobalamin (methyl B12) may help restore that over time. Vitacost makes a version which is safe for cats.

Welcome Jen and Mac!

You've come to the right place.

Most of us have been where you are now so I understand about how you must be feeling.

In the meantime, before you see the vet, it might be a good idea to read up on how to care for your sugar kitty on this site and catinfo.org. Also watch some videos on Youtube on home testing the blood sugar of a cat. That will help you so much!

My grandkitty, Hank, is also a black and white kitty.

Hank was diagnosed on July 25, 2014 with diabetes. My son tried to care for him for about a month and a half before we asked one more time for him to bring Hank to our house. His numbers are just now starting to get close to normal part of the days.

What are you feeding Mac? I didn't know how bad dry food was for cats till I read the articles on catinfo.org. So definitely a switch to a wet food diet that is low in carbs. will help his BG numbers.

Do you have any questions? We are here to help.

Kimmie
