Just diagnosed today

We got the call a couple hours ago that our Ollie (13 year old male) has been diagnosed with diabetes . We decided to treat him with glipizide.
I was hoping someone could give us any advice they can. He's such good boy, we just want to do whatever we can to help him.

Welcome to FDMB the very place to help you help your Ollie. I have no experience with glipizide. I will let others speak to that. There is a wealth of information here and people to help you decipher it all.

The (2018) AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats has this to say about glipizide.

"Sulfonylureas such as glipizide promote insulin secretion from the pancreas and can be used in cats. Oral glipizide has been used successfully in cats with DM, with benefits being reported in approximately 40% of cats. Transdermal application is unreliable. Adverse effects following oral administration include cholestasis, hypoglycemia, and vomiting. There is concern that glipizide may contribute to progression of DM and pancreatic amyloidosis. The TaskForce only recommends glipizide for use in cats with owners who refuse insulin therapy, and only with concurrent dietary therapy."

So, what diet did your vet recommend, for your diabetic cat?

We don't recommend glipizide here, because it basically makes the remaining insulin producing cells in the pancreas work harder and irreversibly damages them over time. Damage that results in the cat needing insulin therapy anyway.

Thanks Deb I couldnt remember the reasons about the "Glipside" therapy. Thanks for that clarification.

I would not use glipizide on my cat. It makes the pancreas work harder and you will ruin any chance you might have of getting Ollie into remission.
Ollie would do far better in insulin.

I was reading about it for cats and boy it looks very dangerous to use
