Good Evening all. I didn't want this thread to get lost in Jax's other daily thread. I hope no one minds.

I just came back from the vet. This is the one that I was looking to 'hire' if anyone remembers my posts from last week.

Good news is she has echoed what some of you expressed when I asked for advice.
Here we go:

She actually studied the SS I sent her and she thinks 2u is too high. She would like for us to start over anew, so to speak, and start Jax at 1.5u.
She also wants me to hold the dose. She said this and looked at me semi-amused because she knows what his SS looks like. She believes his body isn't having a chance to catch up to the dosing, hence the bouncing.(Exactly what a few of you expressed). She talked about the Somogyi effect and that she does believe that the effect happens in cats. She said she is willing to work with me, etc, etc...

Also said to look into Purina DM as she has had good rates of remission on patients using the DM but if he doesn't like it then no worries. (is this decent stuff?) She will work with me with the lower carb FF. Overall, I was very impressed with her. Very knowledgable about FD and made a joke about the letter I sent her in advance with my list of 'requirements.'

Overall, a good visit and I think that I will start over so to speak and begin tomorrow with 1.5u. Wish us lucky.

Oh yes, she was glad I was testing and pretty amazed. She asked me to not to test so much, compared it to stepping on the scale everyday. I told her I will hold the dose but will not hold the testing. She laughed and said, "Fair enough....we got to start somewhere."

Nice sense of humor. Overall pleased with her. Visit in approx 10 days. Pray I can hold that dose, ya'll. I'll try my best.

Wow! She sounds fantastic! I am so impressed that she was willing to agree to disagree on the food and amount of testing. It is so nice when they treat us like a valued, intelligent consumer. I think you have a keeper.

I think that all sounds promising Lisa. She sounds reasonable and willing to work with you. Invaluable!

I have to chuckle when I see the sales pitch for the expensive prescription food. I got it from both the vets I have gone to but I hold my ground and feed what I think is best. Others may have different opinions on what works best for their kitties. I know Science Diet MD diabetic food is 14% carbs. What we feed is between 1 and 2%. Feeding 14% doesn’t make sense to me, even if it is “well balanced”. Conversely, my Mom feeds Science Diet CD to her cat who had terrible problems with UTIs. We are afraid to change anything now because he is stable, so she still feeds that food. I would say just check into it before you say yes to prescription food.

Holding the dose is hard to do but it seems to work for us. Starting is tough because you have to find something you can actually hold. Like something where the preshots aren’t sky high or the mid day dips real low. We are trying to find that now starting over again after our dental here. For us feeding the same thing every day helps too because our cat seems to be very food sensitive. I vary his “toppings”, maybe a sprinkle of catnip, a few slivers of chicken or shrimp some days to mix it up.

Lisa,
Purina DM isn't actually bad. Two drawbacks. Many cats seem to burn out on it since it only comes in one flavor. And of course, the cost is high. The canned is 7% cal from carbs. Pretty high protein for a non-seafood flavor. Not sure exactly what the ingredients label looks like. It may have some fish in it. Probably liver too.
Overall, it sounds like this new vet is great, and you should be very encouraged!

Sounds like a great vet! She is a keeper! Wish we had even half that good around here. It is slim pickings here....

Good job!

Lori

Way to go , Lisa! (See, I told you it was ok to hope! ;-) )

Sounds like a great game plan the two of you have agreed to. I so love the sound of that! Don't you?
