Good afternoon

My name is Zabrina and my family has just adopted 8 year old buddy. He is a white, black and orange tabby that was diagnosed with diabetes but the hospital has it controlled with diet. I have never had a kitty with health issues. I have had a Russian blue by the name of Sasha since she was a kitten so now we are attempting to socialize her with buddy and I have to learn about how to keep him healthy. As help or places I can go to read more about how to keep him healthy and happy would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Zabrina, welcome to you and Buddy! Bless you for adopting a diabetic kitty! One of the best things you can do for him is learn to home test him using a glucose meter. It's easy to do and will tell you how well he's responding to diet.

What are you feeding him? A low carb wet food is best. Many of us use Fancy Feast Classics or Friskies Pates, just be sure to stay away from foods with gravy, potatoes and grains. If you have any specific questions come to the Main Health Forum.

Hello and welcome. How wonderful for you to adopt a special kitty.

The food is probably DM if it's the pate it's 3% carbs. The shredded one is a bit higher. Anything with gravy or sauce is normally to high in carbs.

As mentioned above fancy feast and friskies are fine as well as Proplan Savor (Petsmart) it's under 3%. And Sheba perfect portions or cans.

I have been doing some reading and planning to contact the Vet that was caring for Buddy prior to my family adopting him. His diabetes is controlled with his diet but I am concerned because I dont know his usual habits so knowing when he is acting abnormally right now is a crap shoot. Since this is only day two of him being home, I anticipate the hiding out that he is doing is quite normal, although we were able to give him a dry shampoo rub down..I groomed him for about 30 minutes removing the excess fur that was matted up. He was very calm about the whole process and I gather that is due to his being 8 years old. My other baby Sasha has been getting used to his smell and thus far we have kept him separated from her. I dont want to stress him out while he is getting used to a new home. I notice he drinks quite a bit of water. Buddy is not on any insulin and I wonder if someone can point me in the direction of some materials that would help me with him since he is not on medication?
Thank you for your help
