Junior, made bad decision

Well, we just got home from the vet. Did the test with my relion micro vs alphatrak....75/100. I was very surprised at how low both numbers were considering how bad Junior was shaking.

Here's the problem, I posted yesterday about his urinating. Brought a sample to the vet and they found nothing. Sue, you're not going to like this after sending me the link to Dr. Lisa's......I don't know what I was thinking, I read the link yesterday. My vet suggested instead of spending a few hundred dollars on the culture that he could give him a shot of Convenia just in case. I said "yes". I just reread the article and now feel like crying. I cannot change what just happened, just hoping for the best now. I was not even going to admit this to anyone, worried what you all will say. Please be supportive if you can.

Covenia does not cause a problem in every cat who takes it Some do fine. I would suggest you reread Dr. Lisa's information on the symptoms and be ready to act quickly if anything changes with Junior. But really, it is NOT every cat. It is a fairly rare reaction.
 
Please don't beat yourself up. Everyday is a learning expiernce. We are suppose to learn from our decisions & apply it the future. If we didn't learn then what kind of place would earth be? Please don't feel like you can't ever admit mistakes here. We are your biggest cheerleaders that will help you through anything.

I do, however think his numbers are kinda rockin' at the moment...
 
Laura - I have a couple of cats that are completely impossible to pill or give liquid to. If I'm lucky, I may get one dose into them. Convenia has saved them a lot of times. I've read the info, and would prefer not to use it again - it makes perfect sense - but in some cases, it IS the better option.

For the ones in my household who have had it, they've all responded fine.

Good luck to Junior - hopefully he'll respond just fine too!
 
Aw, don't beat yourself up over this. When you go to the vet's office, it can be very, very hard to go against their advice.

Plus, there is an excellent chance that your cat will be just fine. When my vet wanted to give Josie a Covenia shot and I declined, he was told me that he had given MANY cats with no issues. Ultimately, I chose to go with a different medicine, but my vet felt very comfortable with the Covenia. So comfortable that I actually felt slightly stupid declining it.

So, just because some other cats had issues doesn't mean yours won't be among those who do perfectly fine on this medicine.
 
Harley was given a shot of Covenia without my knowledge, I didn't realize it until I went to file the invoice away. I was freaking out but nothing bad happened, he was fine.

I was told to watch his gums, and bring him back if they looked pale.
 
Laura, I too had previous cats that got this drug without any reaction. I had no clue until I came here. We all make the best decisions we can at the time. No beating yourself up. You guys are doing good. We all learn stuff everyday. Hugs.... :YMHUG:
 
Throw me in the group that has had cats receive Convenia with no reaction! In fact, the vet gave Kitty a convenia shot last year without asking....I was not happy, but she had no problems. I have another 16 year old cat that received it last fall without the vet asking-- no problems!

BUT, it is now clearly written on my chart...NO Convenia or Metacam!
 
Junior's numbers lately look great. It looks like 1 unit isn't quite enough, and that 1.25 gets him greens and he might react a little bouncy but not drastically. Wondering if you have thought about fattening or skinnying the dose based on his preshot number? Like just bit under 1.25 on a 350 or just over 1.25 on red number? Not really a sliding scale per se, but somewhat "customized" dosing...

I'm guessing the vet was happy with a 75 or 100 when he checked Junior?

I was pretty sure that this day in age, no one was accepting convenia for their cats. Glad to hear those of you that have (and those who weren't told about it), had no problems.

Carl, the custom dosing is exactly what the doc and I talked about. My biggest concern was how to advise any sitters to dose. He recommended the same as you. ;-)
