Julius update

Hello all! I am back! My hubby did a great job of taking care of Julius while I was away.... I updated his SS. He has been around 26-27 before he eats and low 30's after, he is acting normal and slept with me last nite. Like John said we have been adding some potato flake to his food which brought him up some. Does anyone on here have experience with a cat who's normal range is in the 30's?? I know he can't hypo but 20's seems really low to me..... our regular vet did not seem alarmed but suggested the potato flake, the other vet freaked out and told John to give Julius honey, which he did and he went up to 121, and a few hrs later went back to 49.... thank god! anyway.... just wondering if anyone had any other thoughts?? thanks!

Remember - human meters can be 20% higher or lower than the actual value (and the FDA allows this, in the US)
for example, 40 could be as low as 32 and as high as 48.

A way to check - take 2 readings, 1 right after another and see what the difference is. The amount of variance will become larger at higher values.

Insufficient samples may give false readings.

Expired or damaged test strips may give false readings.

Also, have you ever calibrated your meter? For some, you can buy test solution at the store. For others you have to order it. The WalMart ReliOn does have a free test solution which you must call and request. And someone here, I believe, used a glucose solution and diluted it to a particular concentration, then used that.

My meter was 30 points off my vets meter this morning... I bought a new one and then ordered the solution over the phone for my existing meter. The scary thing is that no one on here or my vet mentioned it and it read 21 this morning after breakfast and a snack! I am posting to everyone to be aware of this because I wasn't and as a newbie you don't think about it.

Reminder: if vet is using a pet-specific meter (ex AlphaTrak), it will read, on average, 30 points higher.
And remember the plus or minus 20% - if both were human meters, your meter plus 20% vs vets meter minus 20% could still overlap.

I read my meter's manual front to back, which is how I found out about the control solution. I wouldn't have thought of it either!

I read my manual and my meter was working fine for about 4 weeks. I think his 20 something readings despite him feeling fine were indicators that the meter was not working right, I bought an accucheck this morning and it said 43 and the freestyle said 27, 2 minutes apart after he had breakfast about an hour before. That makes NO sense....the accucheck requires twice as much blood and I think that is a good thing. I ordered the control solution but in the mean time I decided to buy a new meter. I asked my vet about the fact that people have said there meter should be 30 points different, they said no, it should be the same (or at least very close) Why would there meter say one thing and mine say something totally different? Glucose is Glucose. They asked me to bring my meter to check it against theres...... I just don't get it.

I just posted in your other thread, but your vet is wrong if they think that low numbers on a human meter will be the same as low numbers on the AT. The Queensland Veterinary protocol developed for Lantus and Levemir have two different sets of numbers to go by when lowering the dose based off of which meter you use. It is 50 for human meters and 80 for the AT. That in and of itself should point out that there is a difference between the two at lower numbers.

Don't give potato flakes or honey at these low numbers since Julius is OTJ right now. You are jeopardizing that by giving the high carb stuff honestly. Kitty can't go hypo with no insulin for so long. There have been a hand full of kitties on here that hit 20s and 30s while OTJ.
