Officially purchased Angels first Lantus pen. We plan to start her 1 week from tomorrow since I'll have 2 days in a row off to monitor. :) That will also give me a week to learn as much as I can and buy some u-100 syringes. We had a good run on Vetsulin but these reds as of late are breaking my heart. I feel like she's as good as she's going to get on Vetsulin and it's not good enough.

I also started our dance with diabetes using Vetsulin and then switched over to Lantus. It works really differently from Vetsulin and that was the hardest part for me to wrap my brain around. Read the stickies and then let us know your questions.

I will most definitely have questions for you. Especially now that I know you were using Vetsulin and now Lantus!

Please let us know how we can help. Reading over the sticky notes at the top of the board will help to familiarize you with Lantus. The front end of the learning curve is huge but the good news is you are already home testing. If you are planning on continuing to use dry food, you're only option as a dosing strategy is the Start Low Go Slow approach. (The requirement for the Tight Regulation Protocol is that your cat is eating a low carb, caned food diet.)

Some of the differences between Vetsulin and Lantus that you will need to get used to include:

  • Dosing is based on the nadir, not the pre-shot value.
  • You do not use a sliding scale dose.
  • Lantus is a long-acting insulin. What you know about Angel's insulin onset, nadir, and duration will not apply to Lantus.
  • Lantus is a depot-type of insulin. Again, this is what makes it very different from Vetsulin. Because of the depot, you do not see an immediate response to dose changes.
  • Doses need several days to stabilize.
Since you're not starting Lantus for a week, you may want to keep reading and looking at people's spreadsheets. This will give you a feel for how Lantus works.

Good luck

Hello and welcome over here. Neko was also started on Caninsulin/Vetsulin and it didn't do her any favours. She was also a frequent visitor to reds and blacks, but she was a little "complicated" with two high dose conditions.

Post again a day or so before the switch, and we can help you with a suggested starting dose.

Will do thanks!

Lantus cannot come soon enough. :( I don't get her numbers lately. I feel like we've moved 5 steps backwards. Her preshots used to be SO much better. And I feel like any increase right now could send her too low.

Welcome to Lantus Land!
Any thoughts of eliminating dry food from Angel's diet?
We cant because our other kitty wont eat wet food no matter how hard we try. So although angel doesn't eat hardly any if the evo we still need for the dry to be acceptable for her. When we start Lantus we are increasing her wet food to 3 small cans a day and then she probably won't eat any of it.
