Hi everyone,

I posted when Jenny was first diagnosed with diabetes and everyone was so helpful and encouraging so I am coming to you again. It has been about 5 months since we started Jenny (5 year old 9.5 lb cat) on a regimen. She is currently on ProZinc (up to 2 units twice a day) and she eats Purina DM management dry food... I know this isn't ideal but before you begin on her food, know that this cat would rather starve than eat wet food and trust me, she almost did. Anyways for the entire 5 months, I have not gotten her glucose levels below 400... ever. I home test and in the beginning her numbers were so high, they wouldn't register (600+). Now I can get them down to 400 but that's as low as they go (2 hours... 5/6 hours after dose). I slowly increased her insulin but don't want to give her more than 2 units at a time. She drinks and pees a ton but my new concern is she is now peeing all over the house, particularly all over our new furniture... I'm not sure what to do anymore. I'm pregnant and don't need to worry about her peeing in the baby's room. This all started this spring. She had a blockage from something she ate (turned out to be stuffing from a destroyed dog toy). It took a few days for it to pass but she never really recovered. We then began noticing she was quickly losing weight. That's when we took her back to the vet and she was diagnosed with diabetes. I'm not sure if there is more to it. She seems to be happy and not in pain but she is always drinking water and now peeing all over the house. Anyone else struggle with their kitty? My vet is very passionate but other than extensive testing has just suggested euthanasia....

Any suggestions would be appreciated but please be nice. I'm doing everything I can...

I am sorry you two are having a difficult time. I see two choices: 1) Change the food to a lower carb dry. Young Again is one of the choices. It is only available on line but they will send a sample before you buy. 2) continue to raise the dose to compensate for the higher carb. I would raise the dose every 3 cycles or so by 0.25 each time - as long as you can monitor, especially 5-7 hours after the shot. I would increase until you see better numbers.

So sorry you're having these problems! Yes the Purina DM is a little too high in carbs, but a cats gotta eat! There is a food, Young Again, that is a low carb dry food. It seems expensive, but it's so dense that they eat much less so it goes a long way. If you call the company they will send you samples.

The peeing all over is likely due to Jenny's being unregulated. Since you are home testing, if you could set up a spreadsheet and fill in The numbers it will help us to see what's going on and be better able to help you with that.
