Jeddie is getting .1u bid now - numbers range from 140-180 at PS and 70-ish for nadir. He is getting used to the testing, but his ears are so thin compared to Beau, or any of my other cats, and they are more sensitive, so I have to be careful where I stick him. I posted his before and after pix on Community to show how his fur is filling out, etc.

Beau had his methimazole increased on Sat from .5 tab am/.25 tab pm to .5 tab bid. I guess I will wait two weeks and re-weigh him to see if there is any change for the better. If not, he needs to go in. He still seems "hurt" that I am not testing him instead of Jeddie. Which is silly because he didn't seem to miss being tested all the time after he went OTJ.
 
Aww Jeddie, let's get you back off the juice buddy! Hopefully this is just for a short time. Nice job on the spreadsheet Sheila!

And hopefully the increase in Beau's thyroid meds will help put some of that weight back on. I still find that so funny that he gets his feelings hurt because Jeddie is the one getting tested now. Tigger would love to trade places with Beau. He does not like testing, but he has always tolerated it.

How is Beau's appetite?

Wednesday Feb 10

Well, Jeddie went 24 hrs between shots - mostly because I was just wiped out last night and didn't test him - so no shot. Tested 4+ hrs after the meal and he was 126... so that was good.

But he was 155 in the am. I plan on shooting .05u if I can get at him. He is behind their climbing shelf up against the window looking out at the snow - and ignoring me.

Beau's appetite seems good (always comes, always eats, looks for food at off-meal times), but he doesn't eat cat food with any gusto. He DOES like the chicken treats at testing time so I am giving him a bit more. It's just boiled or lightly microed chicken breast. He is crossing the 11.5 y.o. mark, an age I never thought he would see, and there are little things that make me think he is becoming "old" and slowing down - also something I never thought he would do - but the weight loss is too fast for just aging. I hope I can get him to put on muscle mass again. That's why I was thinking that the extra chicken protein might help.
 
Sheila, I supplement Tigget with boiled chicken (it's cooked for 3 hours in crockpot) - bonus is she loves it and always eats it which she does not always do with cat food and her kidneys are fine, so I don't worry about the extra protein. I don't necessarily think it's helped her add muscle mass, but has helped her maintain. As they get older, maintenance is good.

Well, I am home "sick" (just could not make myself go to work today) and went back to bed for a few hours, but slept until 1:30. I dare say I needed it. Anyway, by the time I tested Jeddie he was 189, so he got a tiny bit of insulin. I thought yesterday that I was seeing a reawakening of his pancreas, but 189 at mid day is not great.

Sheila, you asked before about how much taurine to give and I'm sorry I didn't yet get back to you. I give Tigger 500 mg. twice a day...it comes in powder form ( I also put it in my juice 3 X's/day....it is a good antioxidant). It is beneficial to the kidneys as well as the liver, the heart and for helping with insulin resistance. From one of the links in my post below:

"Taurine is proving beneficial for sufferers of Type 2 diabetes. Tests have detected low levels of taurine in many Type 2 diabetics, in addition to low insulin and high glucose levels that are normal indicators of the disease.

A study found that replenishing depleted supplies through supplementation was able to reverse this deficiency and improve symptoms of diabetes. Not only that, but taurine was also able to prevent the destruction of kidney cells caused by high blood sugar levels (J Investig Med 2002);50(6):443-451)."

OK - what's the difference between Taurine and L-Taurine? Or does it make any difference what kind you use?

I am definitely going to give this to all the cats, but it sounds like for Beau, Jeddie and my senior, Charlotte, it might be essential.
 
Hey Sheila, Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Glad you we're able to sleep a bit - sounds like your body needed it.

Hopefully the taurine helps the Bman (thanks for the info Pamela), please let us know. 11 1/2 ay? Well he doesn't look a day over 7 :-D
 
OK - don't make dosing decisions when you have had a bad headache all day... sigh.

I just shot .2u, when I should have shot .05u I think. If you look at his SS, he was lower with the lower doses - almost skipping shots. On .1u he was going to 68, which is ok, but on .25 he was dropping to 50, which is too low for my tastes. So it's either .1u or .05u....

Pamela, thanks for the link to the place you buy taurine. I'm going to see if I can get it locally this weekend before buying online (getting deliveries is such a hassle when you work full time).
