Anyone with experience with Idiopathic or Interstitial Cystitis Treatment in cats????

I am writing at the moment while my female cat, Ketchie, is going from box to box peeing small amounts and she is evidently in pain.

I have had to take her to my vet's three times in two weeks now, she has had fluids just on Tuesday, 2-23, and just an hour or so ago, she started going from box to box (7 different boxes) and is crying, so I know she has pain. An hour ago, I gave her .15 mls of Buprenex, and just 20 minutes ago I gave her .15 mls of Metacam.

She weighs 11 pounds, but she has not been eating very much these last two weeks. I really think I need to get her x-rayed to see if she has something worse going on inside her bladder other than Interstitial Cystitis.

She is 14 and a half years old. I have been posting about her, and I was going to post on the Gen'l Health section, but couldn't find the 911.

I am in distress myself right now, and my heart is pounding (I have hbp and heart issues and my throat feels like it is going to swell up I am so nervous- rare disease I have called HAE). We are under a severe high wind warning and it is now snowing outside. I can't get her to any ER and not sure if I can get her to my regular vet in morning due to the bad weather.

All I need to know is if I can give her another dose of .15 mls. of Buprenex??? I remember giving my Proto last year .3 mls. of Buprenex for this same disease, but he weighed about 20 pounds. Do they go by weight when dispensing the amount of this medicine?

If anyone here can let me know, I would appreciate it.

This is her fourth flare up in two weeks, and if this keeps up, I will have to think of putting her down. It is killing me to watch her suffer like this.

Thanks!

Has Ketchie had any antibotics? I know there's differences of opinion for treating cystitis with or without antibotics. I had a kitty that had a few epiodes a year and she responded well to a round of Zeniquin. I also thought she did had fewer episodes when taking Cosequin.......may be antedotal, but seemed to work for her...hope Ketchie feels better soon.

according to http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/bu ... page1.aspx, buprenex takes 15-30 mins to kick in (if injected, so longer if injested?) and lasts 8 hours. So if you have buprenex onboard and metacam then no, I would not give more meds. Can you call your vet or any vet for that matter, for more advice?

Buprenorphine is a synthetic opiate that binds to opiate receptors and stimulates them. It is similar to one of the original opiates, morphine.

Buprenorphine is 30 times as potent as morphine and does not result in the negative gastrointestinal effects typically associated with morphine.

Buprenorphine is rapidly absorbed after injection and the effects are usually felt within 15 to 30 minutes, lasting about 8 hours.

Precautions and Side Effects

While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, buprenorphine can cause side effects in some animals.

Buprenorphine should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.

The drug should be avoided in animals with kidney disease, underactive thyroid gland and Addison's disease.

Buprenorphine should be used with caution in animals with head trauma, compromised cardiovascular function and geriatric or severely debilitated animals.

Since it is metabolized by the liver, buprenorphine should be used with caution in animals with liver disease.

Buprenorphine may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with buprenorphine. Such drugs include certain antihistamines, tranquilizers, barbiturates and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

In rare cases, buprenorphine can slow breathing, as with other opiates.
The most common side effect of buprenorphine is sedation.
Due to a high index of safety, overdose is rare.

How Buprenorphine is Supplied
Buprenorphine is available in 0.3 mg/ml concentration 1 milliliter ampules.

Dosing Information
Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian. This medication is almost always administered in the hospital but it may be sent home under special circumstances.

The typical dose administered to dogs and cats is 0.005 to 0.01 mg per pound (0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg) intravenous or intramuscular two to four times per day. This dose can also be given orally.

The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects.

Hi Linda Lee, Sunshine, Jen and Jen,

Oh, I feel bad as I did not see this post until just now. I know that you, Linda Lee, were posting for me the other night, but I only was looking on Community and Gen'l Cat Health. I didn't think to check the Diabetic cat health, since Ketchie is not diabetic.

Thanks for all the help and advice! I ran Ketchie back to the vet's for the fourth time, on Friday, and she did x-rays which were clear, and also she gave 100 mls. more of fluid to her. She also put her on Baytril. Once a day for 10 days. She looked at her bloodwork and saw that her white counts were up, and she was a little high on her Urea Nitrogen. She said she may well be suffering from an infection, so it is better to try her on the abs.

I really hate to use Metacam with her, but she did want me to give her a few more days of the Metacam.

Ketchie is not eating very much, and she looks so thin in her loin area. I am feeding her FF and some A/D but she just doesn't seem to have much of an appetite, even before the abs were prescribed.

Thanks for the website info, Jen. I have referred to that first one, and that is an excellent source of info that I have also given to other people. I will check out the second website that you suggested.

Ketchie is a very 'needy' cat and she really likes to have me all to herself. I use my special afghan I made that is soft, that she loves, and I have to lie on the sofa or the bed, so she can get on my stomach and I can just pet her little face over and over and over and over...... I don't mind, but after a while, my arms get tired. She acts like she is addicted to getting petted like that. I sure miss my husband and son, as they used to help me take turns giving in to her need for attention.

Thanks everyone!
