I just received this message on my phone. Can anyone help this little cat before she ends up at the nearby high kill shelter?

Original message:

Lakeside vet clinic in MD is looking for a home for a 12yo diabetic cat that one of their client's can't keep because of allergies. Nicole Reinhart is the one who called and their number is 301-498-8387

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Argh! This vet has a reputation for bringing cats to the high kill Prince Georges Animal Management Division.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Stefani rescued Ahi from Prince Georges. Deb415's diabetic Nikki had been there for awhile, before a rescue group pulled her. My young (4 mo old at the time), healthy kitty Casey served some time there before a local rescue pulled him.

I talked to someone at PG when we were trying to pull Ahi. I was told they do no vetting on the animals, and they really don't have an adoption program. Cats generally only get out of there because "approved" rescues/shelters pull them.

Folks on the Board have worked several times with Denise on the placement of unwanted diabetic cats. She is reliable, although way overworked. Glad to see you back here Denise.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

This kitty is not yet at PGAMG but this vet has a reputation to bringing cats there. In fact, I would put money that the vet tech called PG and was referred to me. I don't have much info on the cat. Please feel free to Nicole Reinhart, 301-498-8387, the vet tech directly. Her phone # and email are on the original posting. Nikki had been rescued by a local group and it was not discovered that she was diabetic until later. For some reason, they shelter already knew that Ahi was diabetic. I hope someone can help! I will assist with transport and anything I can do to help this little girl live out her life with dignity! BTW I love the new format of this board. Congratulations!

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

I just called for Nicole. She's not in the office until later today. The cat is still with its owners and has not yet been surrendered. Apparently, there's a new baby in the picture.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

  I am embarrassed to have gotten the message so garbled but I guess the upshot is, unfortunately, the same. Thank you Venita for following through. I hope someone can help.

Not to be embarassed. I read it that way at first too. In fact, I called to ask about the diabetic at their clinic. They were confused.

The cat's name is Kitty. It is 12 yo and on Lantus. Nicole is going to have the owner contact me.

Update on Kitty (AKA Jasmine)--Why wait until a crisis??

So this story goes back to late February....sigh.

I contacted the vet's office 3 times, phone and email, asking to be put in contact with the surrendering owner. The owner finally emailed me on 3/16 saying:

I got your e-mail from my vet's office here in Laurel, MD. I am not sure if you know my cat's story but I adopted her almost 6 years ago from the Humane Society of Baltimore County. We did not know she was diabetic when we adopted (she may not have been at the time) but we noticed the classic symptoms about 2 years ago and with the help of Dr. Rody we have her health under control. We have found that caring for a diabetic cat is really pretty simple and not nearly as expensive as we would have thought. Recently my husband and I have had a baby girl who is not taking so well to the cat. We have been keeping them apart as much as possible (baby upstairs and Kitty downstairs in the basement) but it really is not a fair solution for either one of them. Kitty is very social and keeping her in the basement is really distressing her. She is not using her litter box and has ruined most of our carpet. I really think this behavior is a combination of being kept in the basement and the adjustment to the baby. We have come to the point where we have to find her a new home. We will be very sad to let her go but we have to pt our baby first and find and fair situation for Kitty. I am hoping you can help us with this task. We really don't want to take her back to the shelter.

I wrote this woman back a very long email, explaining Diabetic Cats in Need and what we do. I asked her to complete the surrender questions and to send pictures. I also asked for access to vet records and to the cat for a home visit.

Nothing back.

This morning I got a call from the vet's office, telling me the cat had been surrendered to the Baltimore Humane Society. I called the shelter to find out whether Kitty was at risk of PTS. Tammy told me that they do not PTS for space or time, only behavior (mostly dogs) and health. I said "Precisely, do you consider diabetes to be a non-adoptable health condition?" Tammy said no, and that they were looking for a foster situation for Kitty. She also said that they were hooking up with Siamese rescues, so I gather kitty is a Meezer or has some Meezer. Tammy took my name and number and told me to communicate with someone else in their adoptions area--Amanda.

I told Tammy to put a note on Kitty's chart that she was not to be PTS. If they scheduled Kitty for PTS, I would get her out within 24 hours. I would need the time to find a rescue on their pull list and get Kitty out. I had already arranged with Nicole at the vet's office that Kitty could be boarded there, or Nicole would even take her home for a bit. I explained to Tammy that I do not have a shelter or foster facilities.

Went out for the afternoon. When I returned, I had a message from Amanda (the other person in the adoptions group) telling me that I should call her and let her know how soon I was going to come in and pick up Jasmine the diabetic cat. (Guess that's a new name, or maybe her old name.) Either the help I offered got garbled, or she's scheduled for PTS.

Can anyone tell me how pissy

to be when I email this "owner" back to try to get the questions answered and photos?

Seriously, someone talk me down off this ledge.

Given Kitty was surrendered, the vet's office sent me the records, but as usual, the handwriting is pretty atrocious and unreadable.

I guess the only way for me to get caught up on my DCIN work is to light a fire under my butt like this.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Well, I'll add to your stress.....whatever happened to the meezer named Song? BTW, Vinnie's heart is excellent, still off insulin, stool clean, yeast infection in both ears and liver enzymes elevated. Put on Denosyl and will recheck in a while with blood work and Ultrasound.

Song in VA

I'm still working with Song's Mom. She's going to try diet control and glip before going for rehoming. The Mom is extremely needle phobic.

Poor Vinnie. I'll be looking for updates.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Venita, nothing "poor" about this boy.....he is settling in just fine....was just up on my lap at the computer. I was playing some sounds for him. No problem putting meds in his ears either. I think he was very relieved to get back out of the carrier and realize he was home and not some other new place.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Venita, if you need anything, I'm here. MD isn't that far and I'd be willing to drive. I talked to hubby after our communications the other day and while I absolutely do not require it, I have his permission to open up our hearts and lives to helping kitties in need in any way that we can contribute  My man kinda rocks my socks.

He told me he's going to make a sign to hang on the front door.... Welcome to Nora's Ark.... which is how he's referred to our house since last summer when I took in Echo the blind wondercat and Bella the SPCA girl cat_pet_icon

I will pm you my contact info so you have it handy in case you need it quickly.

Confusion cleared up, crisis over

From my previous post:

Went out for the afternoon. When I returned, I had a message from Amanda (the other person in the adoptions group) telling me that I should call her and let her know how soon I was going to come in and pick up Jasmine the diabetic cat. (Guess that's a new name, or maybe her old name.) Either the help I offered got garbled, or she's scheduled for PTS.

Just spoke to Amanda. Tammy had not given her the full story. Amanda is fine with the shelter getting Jasmine (her former name) into a foster home, while DCIN works on trying to find her a purrmanent home. Amanda will complete the intake questions and supply pictures, and I won't HAVE to contact Jasmine's former owner, although I may just to express my disappointment that she couldn't work with DCIN.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

I won't HAVE to contact Jasmine's former owner, although I may just to express my disappointment that she couldn't work with DCIN.

By all means. The woman's first email was very reasonable - you can't put your cat ahead of your baby BUT wouldn't working with you have been easier than what she did?

Do not hold back on the "disappointment", Venita.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

Well, I would not be too hard on the owner.

If you beat her up too badly, she will never refer a future diabetic
cat (hers or a friend) to DCIN or FDMB if we are too grumpy or pushy.

Re: MD (Laurel) Senior diabetic left @ Vet Hospital!

I would like an explanation of "the baby is not taking too well to the cat".....what the h**l does that mean?

Jasmine in Baltimore Humane Society

I finally have pictures of Jasmine. On the blog here. Gosh she is pretty; put me in mind of my kitten Emma (GA).

Well, I will give you a preview here.

I believe that we will be getting access to Jasmine for an evaluation next week. Please start thinking about whether there is a place in your home and heart for Miss J.
