Jake has been in remission for almost two years. I test him about once a month to make sure diabetes is still at bay. He usually comes in between 70 and 80 three hours after eating. I do it this way to make sure the pancreas is still functioning. I tested him today and nearly fainted when the meter read 165. I did it twice to make sure, and it said the same thing. He does not appear to have any clinical signs of diabetes. The only things I can think of is that the strips are out of date or that his new Adequan medicine for arthritis (he is nearly 20 years old) might be the culprit. What else do you think could be going on? I would so appreciate input!

Oh no! I don't have any advice, unfortunately, but I understand the worry. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
 
I'd suggest a vet visit. He may have an infection brewing and the meter is giving you advance warning. Melissa's suggestion regarding Jake's teeth is also a consideration.
 
I decided to do a curve in order to provide more information. At +2 (from the 165 reading), Jake's BG was 117. Try to sanely think this through, I am wondering if when I did that first reading I did it right after he ate - in other words, maybe Jake did not eat his food when I gave it to him to three hours prior; maybe he ate it just before the three-hour mark when I tested him the first time getting the 165 reading. He just had a senior profile not too long ago, so I don't think he has anything else brewing. I just went out and got new strips and will be doing a +4 in about 15 minutes. Given this added information, what does everyone else think?

I just used the new strips to do a +4 which was 134. So this is how it has gone so far: 1st check = 165 (maybe too soon after eating), +2=117 (these were both on the old strips), and then the +4=134 (using new box of strips). In addition when I was gone buying this new strips, I forgot to pick up his food and I can see that he ate more! Does this make any sense?

I would make sure that Jake isn't getting food too close to shot time so for now, while you're being a detective, you are eliminating food as a variable. Have you changed any food? If there's a food change, it can effect numbers temporarily.

Are there any changes to your household? Any source of stress can elevate numbers. Track down Barbara's Tuffy's SS and you'll see what seeing a stray on the patio can do!

Also, just because you had a senior panel done several weeks ago doesn't mean an infection isn't brewing. Think about the way the flu hits -- one day you're fine and the next you're as sick as can be.

Jake is not getting any shots, as you can see from the inital post he has been in remission for almost two years, so I am assuming you meant "testing times." Yes, testing just after eating is not a good thing. I think that is what happened when I got the 165 as he usually tests (at his once per month testing) between 70 and 80. I guess I thought that he ate the food earlier. I will be sure to check out what happens when kitty sees a stray on the patio. Thanks for a great laugh - I needed that!

I'm glad you caught this early. I'll agree with the comments about a vet visit. Any pain or infection can lead to higher numbers. I also suggest going back to the basics - when you first started his OTJ trial, we suggested feeding multiple small meals each day to go easy on his pancreas. Maybe measuring/controlling his feedings for a few days will help baby his pancreas back into shape.

I agree with Libby.

I'm having to this with Curry right now. She's only been of the juice for 6 months but she has asthma that might elevate her numbers. And her numbers have been higher than normal the last two weeks. She's been averaging around a 100 with a few higher numbers.

So I did take her to the vetty....all was OK.

Now I'm making sure I space her meals out every 3 hours. I had been giving the 8 meals per day approx. 3 hours apart but last week I screwed up w/her feeder and she got her daytime meals all in the morning over a 4 hour period.....that coupled with increase in pollen here...her numbers have been higher. I don't know if its one or the other or a combination of things.

So I'm going to do a trial of food every 3 hours....today seemed a bit better. I'm actually doing a curve today and will be monitoring her very closely for the next week or so.

Hoping Jake's numbers come down for ya with an easy remedy.
 
Thanks so much everyone - I guess this could be a number of things - I just did a +6 hour test from the original 165. It is 127. This is still higher than Jake's usual 70 to 80 since he has been officially in remission since May 2010, but he has been as high as 118 when testing did not take place at the usual post prandial mark of about 2 hours for consistency. I have been testing him once a month, and today was the day. When it came up 165, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It just occurred to me that maybe his numbers spiked to the 165 today because of his arthritic pain. He has only had 2 Adequan injections at this point, so I am sure he is still not feeling the benefits of that medication yet.
