Dear Lantus Land folks,
It's hard to believe we are celebrating Jake's 19th birthday today and one year (and two days!) OTJ!!! His last insulin shot was 04/29/2010. I just tested him and he came in at a wonderful 59 right around where he usually is at once a month testing time. As you recall you literally saved him from death at the hands of his now former veterinarian in February 2010 by getting him to an E. R. to treat the DKA that he developed when his then vet took him off insulin for reasons I will never know. After the E.R. stay, you helped us to keep on and monitor the resumption of Lantus insulin until he slowly, but surely did not need it anymore. Other than a little arthritis, Jake is a healthy, happy boy today. He eats like a champ (canned food only), has gained weight to about 10.5 lbs now (up from about 7 lbs. which is a good thing), goes up and down the stairs again, and has resumed his nightly howling and prowling. Without you this would not have happened. A wonderful (Godsend) woman in the group, Paige, "found" me on another diabetic board that awful day in February 2010 (just two hours before that vet wanted to put Jake to sleep), and brought me to you where you gave Jake his life. Words cannot even convey what a miracle this group has been- and for that WE are so grateful.
