Jade AMPS 186/ NS after a strange first day of (possible)relapse . Back up 430 this evening

Welp, I just don't get it. Was up all night with my girl and have no idea what is happening with her BG. I know her ears are sensitive after all the poking yesterday(poor baby). I did test at 9:30 this morning and she's at 186. Going to talk to her doctor later today. Jade is definitely more tired than usual this morning which seems understandable after yesterday. Her body was clearly on full alert, I just don't know why. Thank you to everyone that reached out, you guys have never failed me and I am so grateful.
And if we proceed with the Insulin, I will absolutely stay with the syringes!

I’ve always had syringes and I used one for her first ( only dose). I’m supposed to talk to Dawn tomorrow. Personally, I feel good about .5 but I’m pretty sure that she will not agree. One of the things she said when I wanted to use the syringe is there’s no need for half units. I think that if I go against her recommendation, she will drop me as a client. While she’s usually pretty empathetic, this particular scenario has seemed to make her pretty intolerant towards me. It’s actually hurtful as we have become friends.
 
If you try 0.5 units tonight, it'll give you some data to show her. Besides, what is the alternative? Continue on with 1.0 units periodically and wild BG swings? I can't believe a vet would drop you as a client because you want to do the best for Jade.
 
Hi Jill, maybe it would help for you to share some spreadsheets here on the FDMB with Dawn. You can share my spreadsheet if you wish. If you look at earlier this year, Ruby was on very small doses of insulin. I had remission in mind then, and I found that even a drop of insulin had a profound effect on Ruby's glucose levels. Increasing by whole units isn't really safe. If you look at Ruby's numbers in the last week since I went from 2.25 to 3 units, you can see a dramatic effect on her blood sugars. Ruby was almost in remission and then we had to introduce steroids for her small cell lymphoma, but all of those blue and green numbers on her spreadsheet were on doses less than 1 unit.

I understand why your relationship with your vet is important, but here is an opportunity for you to teach her something about feline diabetes. Ruby has seen at least 10 different vets for all of her ailments over the last year, and each time I find myself teaching the doctors.

I will start again tomorrow for sure. I don’t want to start tonight as we were both up all night last night and I’m just starting a new job. I don’t want to give her a full unit again until she can stabilize a bit, I’m
only comfortable with .5. This adds so much anxiety to an already bad situation for me which spills over to Jade. I’m actually scared to talk to her tomorrow. It sucks.

One of the reasons this particular vet is important is that she’s a house call vet. Jade doesn’t do well when we have to go to an office.
She FLIPS. And the meds to calm her do a number on her for days afterwards, even half a dose.
I would love to think that she would be open to working WITH me on this, but I don’t think that’s the case.

Doctors are into cold, hard science. They like numbers. A spreadsheet with data taken from an unemotional glucose meter is objective fact. The least you can do is try to show her what your reasoning is based upon, and it's not just bad advice given by a bunch of wackadoodles on the internet.
 
It makes sense to try the 0.5 units as you have had to skip two doses after giving the 1 unit. Splitting the dose and trying it each 12 hours is what has worked here for many cats.
Lantus works best if given every 12 hours. Skipping doses just messes with the depot and is not good for the cat. Continuing to give 1 unit when it is obviously not working just doesn’t make sense.
I would try it and if your vet doesn’t like it, she is inflexible and I don’t think she can know much about FD or willing to learn more about it.
I get you are in a difficult position. But remember you are Jades advocate and you pay the bills.

I will give her .5 in the morning. But, I will only be able to test her at +2 and +4. Is there a chance she can hypo on .5 unit? I cannot be at work, serving customers while worrying about Jade dying.It’s a brand new job and they don’t know me well enough to care about ( and excuse) my high anxiety.
