I don't know what is going on with this little orange man of mine. Thought we were doing well, then his #'s start going high again. Not sure if he needs an increase or what. Not sure if the sliding scale was working with him. Should I see about switching insulins? My current vet gives him PZI, but my second opinion uses Lantus. I'm totally stressed and lacking support in "the real world" . This page and FD on Facebook are a blessing.
Thanks for having a look.

Lantus works rather differently, as it builds up in the system over successive doses and it needs very regular dosing with as close to exactly 12 hours as you can manage. That said, it seems like the curves on Lantus are flatter than those on Prozinc.

Maybe read over the sticky posts in the Lantus Tight Regulation board and see what you think about those. If the vet will prescribe one 3 mL pen at a time, and you get the savings card from www.lantus.com, it gets the cost down to $25/pen for the first 5 pens. Also, you draw the insulin out using the standard U-100 syringes, as if the pen were a mini-vial.

Unless he has other stuff going on (teeth, infection, contraband food) i am wondering if the dose is too high. On 8/3 pmps you shot a falling number. The one unit on the black that am (which could have been a bounce) dropped him down into the 300s at pmps and he was still falling. Then the dose at pmps took him into the greens and he bounced again.

I wonder about lowering the dose back to maybe .75 or .5 and seeing how he looks. Get midcycles consistently and see if he is bouncing and if he is, lower the dose. If you'd post daily for awhile, we can help better. If you lower the dose, be sure to test daily for ketones.

I would wait to consider another insulin until you see what is really happening with ProZinc. He has doing well with it, staying in lower ranges with a tiny amount of insulin.
