Good idea to start a new thread. Instead of letting the other one get buried since it has a lot of good info in it, maybe post it in your profile and title it something like "Dose adjustments from 5/22 to 6/5" so that it can be referred to. I know that is why we have spreadsheets, but if the reasons for a dose change aren't in the comments section then having a thread to refer back to is helpful sometimes. :)

At least he was getting some blue's before on .5 units with no huge swings so maybe stick with it for a while longer this time.

Great idea Pamela about linking the previous thread in my profile. I kept it going so long because I hated to lose all that great discussion and info. I think the link is working OK.

Hope yours works for Klinger too if you increase tomorrow. Looks like he's been running pretty high. The heat really affects them too, I think. We are due for a heat wave starting Wednesday...I might have to break down and put the a/c in the living room window already. I know Jack doesn't eat too much when it's hot.

Wednesday...that's about right. I grew up in CT and my family still lives there...anyway, it takes about 3 days for our weather to reach the east coast. A heat wave is definitely heading your way. You may want to get the ac in and make sure it works before Wednesday. I can tell you, it's not pleasant without it!

Ugh...looking even worse today! Hot day, but he seemed to eat ok during the day. Eating now at PM shot time. Going to be very hot the next 2 days, will put in a/c tonight.

Ugh is right. :(

Can you get some taurine to add to his food? It has been said to help in regulating diabetes and there is usually not enough added in canned food since the effectiveness is lost during the heating process. It is tasteless and it can't hurt....here is a link, scroll down to #6:

You can buy it in powder form here or maybe at your local health food store:

Wondering too if a visit to the vet to check on his teeth would help. Jack is such a hard one to figure out, sigh. I can imagine how frustrating it must be for you.

Are you still feeding the Fancy Feast Classics?

Maybe let this dose ride another day and then raise it to .6 units. Or if you think do it sooner - those four's aren't very good to see. :(

Raising to .6U tomorrow might help although you still may not see an effect on BG till the next day or so. And I agree with Pamela that there could be something else amiss which is interfering with Lev's action.

Thanks, I will look into the Taurine and see if I can find it.

I went to the store tonight and bought some cans of Wellness to try. I had mentioned in the last thread finding those white flecks in the Fancy Feast. I tried getting some cans at a different store over the w/e, and a different flavor, but they all seem to have it. The turkey and giblets I opened this morning seemed to have a lot of these white things in it. They don't look like bugs or eggs. Not sure if it could be any bits of filler or something added that might be higher carb? I never noticed it until last week, I think it was on 5/31 when he went really high. Since he started going high after I noticed it last week, it's kind of been in the back of my mind that maybe it could have something to do with it. When Jack was first diagnosed and I brought him home from the vet I had gotten Wellness canned, then changed to FF in the first few days.

So I think I will hold with the same dose for one more day and see if the switch to the different food makes any difference. He ate quite a bit of the Wellness this evening, so I will be curious to see if it makes any difference. And yes, this is very frustrating!!

UPDATE! Just checked Jack at +5 1/2 hours before I went to bed....167!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I swear it's something in that FF!

I did just send the vet an email to see if they do dentals at the office, and I will follow up with her. Thanks for your input ladies! Got the a/c in and running, so at least he will stay cool the next few days. :-)

Good idea not to change two things at once. :) I hope the change to Wellness does the trick. Which variety are you using? Wellness is certainly a better grade than the Fancy Feast. Have you seen the Wellness Pouches? I use these when Tigger is a little picky over his raw food and so I sprinkle a little of the LC gravy over the top. They have gravy but are pretty low in carbs. Just for a change.

I hope the coming days show lower numbers for Jack with the change in diet. :)

I am just not a big fan of Fancy Feast anymore. They changed their formulas the other year - I remember people running around looking for old style labels which were original formula. I know we "promote" it on the board, but there are too many varieties and I think that confuses newbies, when all they need to do is find Wellness (which supposedly even Petco carries but I don't see it in their store in my town) or pretty much any lesser known brand and they would have better quality ingredients as well as low carb. I recently tested my cats on a variety of different "better" brands/varieties and ended up with Wellness again because the one food they ate consistently and didn't waste was Wellness chicken. But there are other premium brands with better-than-FF ingredients too.

That's surprising for him to have 167! Maybe you're right about the food. Hmmmmm. What varieties did you feed him? Beef I think you said, but what type - plain beef feast, sliced beef or grilled beef? Grilled and sliced you want to stay away from. Too high in carbs.

357 @ AMPS this morning...was hoping for a lower number but will see what happens today. So far he seems to like the turkey better than the chicken (those were the 2 flavors I bought, canned). Gobbled down the turkey last night (pun intended) but not too much of the chicken that I put in the auto feeder last night. I didn't notice the Wellness pouches as I was strictly looking at canned food, up and down the aisles in PetSmart with my Binky's list pulled up on my cell phone! They didn't have a huge variety of Wellness. If he does well on it I will look at a few other pet stores to see what they have.

Jack was eating Fancy Feast Classics only...beef feast or beef and chicken feast, then over the w/e I got some turkey and giblets. But all the classics only. Have a few cans of grilled variety put away and marked as high carb for emergencies.

Hoping for a better day today! My poor little Jack...he's such a good boy. :-)

So i could just sit and cry right now! Thought we had a little breakthrough with the food switch last night and the drop to 167.

Not so good today. I don't know if I should have increased or decreased after the .3 u. Is he still rebounding? Seem to be getting more 400's the higher the dose. I don't really know what else to do. Increase to .6 tomorrow I guess? confused_cat

Here's my hope for Jack - that if you keep increasing the dose you will be able to get in enough midcycle tests that you can catch a low so we know when he needs the dose decreased. It is very hard to tell because one indication of too much insulin is high flat numbers. But he's only been having those since you decreased, so I think he must need more.

Well, if he's still 400+ in the morning the increase to .6U is probably a good idea. If he's less than 350 maybe hang on to .5U for another cycle and see if he gets more action off of it. Since he had a couple 200s, .5U may just need another cycle to get a hold.

397 @ AMPS, decided to go up to .6 u. He didn't want to eat this morning, so I put down a can of the classic beef FF and he ate a good amount of that then moved over to the Wellness dish.

We'll see what happens today! Heard back from the vet, they do dentals there, she will get back to me today with more info on an estimate. Any other specifics I should ask about? I did read a few threads about dentals and it makes me kind of nervous!

Dentals are only bad if there are extractions. You might ask if they would put Jack on Clindamycin for 5 days or so BEFORE the dental. That may not be accepted practice by some vets, but if he has bacteria build-up, it can help quell it beforehand so that so much doesn't get in his bloodstream if there is bleeding during the cleaning, which usually there is, just like with people. In my experience with Gandalf, he gets it before dentals and also monthly. He once got a bad systemic infection, probably from the dental which had been done about a month prior to me realizing he was sick. That's what my vet thought and we have been doing the Clindamycin for dentals this way ever since.

Thanks for the info Vicky. Will follow up with the vet's office tomorrow.

Still running high...maybe a tad lower today, but still got a 430 at PMPS. He's back to eating FF classic. Other than that 1 low reading the first night it didn't seem to make a difference and he wasn't eating too much of it (neither were the other cats) He loves his FF beef feast!
