Hi,

I posted on here a few months ago when my cat Ninja became diabetic. I now don't give her any insulin anymore as she averages around 5 before food and 6.5 after food and seems to be improving. I was only giving her insulin for a month and a half, 2 months tops.... And she is now eating only zero carb wet food such as Lily's Kitchen.

I have noticed though that her poop is very wet, not really diareah, but looks really sloppy and maybe a bit unhealthy. She probably gets stomach aches from how it looks. when she ate dry food it was always solid pebbles. now just a big messy pile. Sorry for the gross description....

Is there anything she can be fed that won't change her being diet controlled diabetic that will harden the poos? She's doing so well with the blood sugar, just don't want to be hurting her tummy.... she has had this with all the low carb wetfood, It isn't just this one particular brand. If anything, it was worse when she was on Sheba. Any such thing as zero carb dry food? I don't care about the price.

A company called Young Again sells a "Zero Carb" dry food. Some people here use it. It is only available by ordering it online.

It is possible for some cats to achieve remission on a high carb diet.
My cat is in remission on extremely high carb dry and wet food.
I am not recommending this, merely saying it is possible.

All you can do is experiment with different varieties of food and see what happens.

Hi Marie,

Was wondering how you were getting on, and am absolutely thrilled that Ninja is in remission! Well done! Woohoo!!!!
:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

I don't know of a zero carb (or even ultra low carb) dry food in the UK... But even if there were such a thing available here, I wonder if the wet food IS the cause of the loose pooh... There may be some other factor. For example, maybe Ninja is sensitive to certain proteins, and it might be worth trying some single source protein foods (or 'novel' proteins/meats that your cat may not normally eat) to see if Ninja is better with some proteins than with others... (Re the above foods, will try to find more info for you...)

Another option that could be worth a go is to introduce some raw food into Ninja's diet. Some folks find that their cats' stomachs are more settled on raw food than on processed food. (Cats on raw diets tend to produce smaller, drier and less smelly poop....)

I use a mix of quality canned food and minced raw wild rabbit for my lot. I get the rabbit in packs of 8 frozen single portions from Woldsway, here: http://www.woldsway.co.uk/acatalog/WILD_RABBIT.html
It may seem pricey but cats tend to eat less raw food than they do of canned food. And in our house there is never any of the minced rabbit wasted. Every scrap gets eaten (unlike the canned stuff... ). And rabbit is often very well tolerated by cats with sensitive tummies.

Minced rabbit may also be helpful to feed because it is 'bone-dense'. For some cats this can be a problem if fed a lot because it can cause constipation. But for a cat with loose stools the minced rabbit might actually be a useful addition to the diet....???

Woldsway also do farmed rabbit which is a tad cheaper, but the wild is absolutely amazing quality. And they also do, I think, a mix of wild and farmed rabbit, and a mix of rabbit and chicken.

Although raw meat alone is not a 'complete food' it is possible to feed, I think, a fifth of the diet this way without causing any nutritional deficiency over the long term. And if you wanted to feed more of it then it only needs some simple supplementing to make it complete. (All meat loses nutrients in the processing (taurine especially), and some meats need more fat and/or organ meat added to make a complete food, and maybe some vitamins like B and E, and fish oil for the omegas).

I never thought my lot would eat raw meat, but, about a year ago, I just tried adding a teaspoonful of it to their normal meals and increased it from there. Now, raw food is their favourite food... You could try Ninja with a little ordinary minced beef or chicken added to her food intially to see if she will eat raw food before ordering from Woldsway.

Another option for a ready made complete raw food is 'Natural Instinct'. It comes in packs of 2 x 500g trays, I think, and is available online and in some independent pet food stores (about a fiver for a pack).

I wouldn't risk high carb food, many kitties fall off the wagon when they go back on carbs!

My cat was initially constipated and then had loose stools too until I got him some fresh wheat grass (cat grass) to chew on. His stool has been prefect since. I limit how much he eats though because as you know, if they eat too much they'll vomit it up. Some pet stores and plant nurseries sell it already growing or you can grow your own. Most pet stores or pet departments carry a wheat grass growing kit. It works for my kitties

Re: is there any dry food she can eat ever again? really wet

I was able to stop IBS in my cat, which may have just been a side effect of diabetes, using one, and only one, product.

At the risk of violating a forum rule, I'm going to plug the product the best I can because I know for a fact that it can save lives, and the creator offers money back.

I called at 10:00 EST in the night to a toll free number on a random holistic supplement website one night because I was so desperate to stop my cat's diarrhea. The place is called Vitality Science. Turns out, the owner, Mr. Becker, answered the phone. He talked me through his suggested protocol and a couple of days later I received three supplements, with one being by far the most important. It's called Feline Comfort Plus. It is the ONLY product that will stop my Little Boy's diarrhea and I cannot recommend the product and the owner enough. Mr. Becker is a very concerned and personable man. His products, from what I have read and experienced, are of the highest caliber available to us.

I think Mr. Becker actually started out in a search for human supplements. I know his supplements for pets are all human-grade products. I don't know the full story, but I believe that it's possible that he's some kind of genius scientist guy who just decided to stop trying to go through the FDA and the millions of other entities designed to stop progress in human health services and products (yes, I'm very jaded about that topic). I could be totally wrong, but the amount of work that he's personally put into his supplements suggests there's more to the story than just a guy who wanted to help pets.

Anyway, I actually just ordered more of the product. I add a little water to the powder, put it in a syringe with no needle, and Little Boy gobbles it up. It's tuna flavored so he likes it. You'll immediately see results the next day. For Little Boy, his feces gets darker instead of the very light color that we all know is not normal for a cat. His stool is usually light colored, loose, and very smelly. The Vitality Science product will make it firmer, darker, and less smelly. It's really, really good stuff and the only product that has ever helped Little Boy. It's not cheap, but it's well worth it, and if your cat doesn't respond Mr. Becker will refund your money. My opinion is that the probability that it doesn't work will be very low.

I found that once I treated Little Boy and switched him to Nature's Variety food, recommended by Mr. Becker, that I didn't have to use the product again until this recent episode where Little Boy was hospitalized for his diabetes, which is a separate very long story. Good news is that his insulin is working, he's gaining weight, barely urinating compared to before, and has much firmer stool (with the help of the Feline Comfort Plus).

Good luck and please report back if you try it.

Rob, we used the Vitality Science products with a foster cat without success. In fact I still have them. We were able to resolve his problems with a raw diet.

I was just recommending this to another member, but you can also try plain pumpkin (make sure there are no spices in it). It works both ways and firms up what's too soft and softens up what might be too hard.

There are also some probiotics like FortiFlora or Renew that have helped other kitties with similar issues. Not sure how easy those are to get in the UK.

And check and see if it might be a food allergy first, like to beef or seafood or even poultry. You can do an elimination test by feeding just one type of protein for a couple of weeks and seeing how Ninja does and then introducing another type and so on and so forth.

Re: is there any dry food she can eat ever again? really wet

Few more options here for some other low carb wet foods to try, and also some that are single/mono protein just in case Ninja is intolerant to certain proteins (the most common intolerances are to beef and chicken, I think, and then fish).

First off, if you'd like to try buying online from Zooplus then Catz Finefoods could be worth a shot, and they are doing mixed trial packs of different flavours at the moment which are pretty good value:

Zooplus also stock Terra Faelis cat foods which, I'm pretty sure, are single/mono protein:

There's also the Happy Kitty Company which stock Granatapet (similar to Catz Finefoods), and also the single/mono protein Ropocat Sensitive: http://www.happykittycompany.co.uk/collections/ropocat

And Ziwi Peak make some venison-based cat foods that suit some cats too. But it is pricey and so maybe worth shopping around for.
