And how do you decide?

It's amazing to me - thanks to the help of this forum - our 4 year old Puma has gone from looking sick with BG 410 on 7/3 to AMPS of 89 and PMPS of 94 today. Glossy coat again, bright eyes, playful. No insulin since the morning of 7/18 (yesterday) when he got 0.5 U of PZI 100.

The big change has been switching him (and our other 3 cats) from free feeding and dry food to wet food - FF classics. That and home BG monitoring with the help of this forum.

How often should we check? And is there a pre-meal BG number that would require insulin? On Saturday I'll have the chance to check a couple of numbers during the day to see what effect eating is having on his BG. When would you suggest I check? He doesn't like having his ear pricked, so I'd like to keep it minimal if I can.

Thank you again!
Jane

We call a cat OTJ if they range from 40-120, with the majority of the time spent in double digits, when off insulin for 2 weeks. Puma is certainly headed in that direction. I'd be sure the food and snacks are lower carb and watch his numbers carefully. If he heads up near the 200 range, you can always give him a tiny dose of insulin. Usually when they are headed toward remission and you have to give a little bit, it lasts much longer than the regular 12 hour cycle - sometimes for days.

You might check the remission thread in the PZI forum and see how the process worked for others. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5659

And be sure to let us know when his 2 weeks is up so we can have a party!
