Is it possible for a diabetic cat NEVER to be regulated?

I am still woring on my boy Loki to regulate him but after another reading of 500 yesterday I am at my wits end. He and I have been dealing with this since last Feb. I have done curves on my own as the vet has also, have done 2 frutosamine(sp) test and still his numbers are all over the place even with adjusting the insuling (Prozinc) several times, he eats well (Wellness only Turkey or Chicken) now, he usually will eat between 6 or 9 onces per day. Going to the vets tomorrow to weigh him. Last Feb he was 17 lbs a big boy with no fat and how he's 10 lbs. He has had a ton of blood work done to check other things and all come back clean and normal including his kidneys and liver. He is still my boy who like to play and hunt and just to cuddle with me every chance he gets.
Maybe I am just not patient enough, it's so discouraging to try and help him through this and I cannot find the solution.

Looking at your spreadsheet, when you have gotten midcycle numbers, he is doing quite well. As we have said, beginning diabetics often bounce from the low numbers to higher ones. You need to recognize that and dose around it. Your dosing is all over the place - .5 units at 285, 2.5 units at 303. That's a big variance in dose for numbers that are 18 points apart.

I would suggest you post daily here or on the PZI forum and get some guidance on dosing every day for a while until you get the hang of this dance. And continue to get those midcycle numbers so we can see how the insulin is working.

My thinking is right along the same lines as Sue's. You will find it really hard to make sense of what is going on with Loki if you don't pick a good dose and try to stick with it.
Her example of the 2u difference between what you shot at those to PS readings is a good example.
It looks like 2.5 is too much, and like .5 isn't enough.
If you can manage to get one or two tests each day or night besides the preshot tests, that will help you figure out a proper dose.
From your notes, many of the dose adjustments have come about by you talking to your vet. Does he have you shooting on a "sliding scale", depending on the preshot number? If so, I understand the logic, because my vet had me doing the same thing. It wasn't until I stopped following her scale (which went as high as 4u) and started reducing to smaller amounts of insulin, that Bob really started doing better. Preshot numbers are important, but they aren't the only numbers that matter. You have to know how low the cat goes in addition to seeing how high he is at shot time. Otherwise, you can't tell if the dose is too high or too low, or just right for that matter.

I agree with the others. Your dosage is all over the place and I see 500's more as a reaction when you skipped a dose altogether.
consistency is hard but really important in managing fd.

The dosage needs to stay consistent for at least a week at a time so you can see how Loki is reacting to the dosage you are giving. Increases should be
smaller jumps when given.


When you first log on to the FDMB website, there are different forums. We are on the main forum right now.
You will want to learn how to post at the Insulin support group forum and go to the PZI subforum.

You will get support daily by posting your amps and getting at least some random mid readings on your spreadsheet so "they " can see how the shots
are affecting Loki. At least that's how I understand you use that forum when you need specific direction. I'm not there yet as I have barely begun.
You can still post on the main forum too but that pzi subforum will be other pzi users that have the specific experience with your insulin.

Don't give up. It's not always easy which is why we have our own little community of support. It can be downright difficult. nailbite_smile
