Is Expired Lantus Usable?

Consider the situation of a new, unopened pen of Lantus with an expiration date of three months ago.

Is that insulin usable, or is it toast?
 
No expert here.. but unopened.. I would try it & see if it works.. if after 5 days or so & no change in #s, I'd toss it.. but it does seem worth trying. I dunno tho...
I did Google & found this... hardly an expert's opinion.. but some info.. Expired Lantus?
 
I would venture to say that the manufacturer's expiration dates are conservative. If it looks clear and has been kept in the 'fridge, it is probably OK. At least give it a whirl (not literally)!

To be honest, I don't know. However, when I look at the expiration date vs. when I've purchased the Lantus, the expiration is years away. My current pen has an expiration of 3/2013. I bought it 4 months ago. I tend to think that if Lantus is past it's expiration, use at your own risk.
