Been doing so well with Angel, then he got a reading of 7 /126 today which is his shot limit. I haven't given him a shot but are those numbers within normal levels? He hadn't eaten for over 2 hours. Also his other ear (with yet ANOTHER PACK OF STRIPS) tested 7.8 one minute later. Is it normal for one ear to test higher and if so, which should I trust? Aaargh, so near but yet so far from being OTJ.

I wouldn't stress too much. That is a normal number, and I can't say for certain about the different numbers with different ears but I have experienced it in the past. What is Angels feeding schedule?

It is normal to see different BGs on different ears for two reasons. One because the BG is really different and other other because of the accuracy of the meter. Further, if the strips were from a different lot. that adds to the difference.

The difference you are seeing would not make a difference to me is what I would do.

Meters sold in the USA are allowed to test +/- 20% from what a lab would get.

Two tests are equal if 1.2 * low number is greater than 0.8 * high number.

I usually only test him if he's not been fed within 2 hours. Tested him tonight and got 6.1 so feel a bit more relaxed now!!! I haven't had a reading of ABOVE 7 since 1st Sept apart from when he managed to get the kittens food.
Due to do a curve for the clinic tomorrow or Monday, fingers crossed he doesn't go sky high after his meals!!
xx

A 126 on an AT equates to 82 on a human meter. Normal. :-)

My vet gave me the reference range for normal BG in non-diabetic cats not on insulin as 3.9 - 8.3 mmol/L on Alphatrak. The target range on the Roomp-Rand Tight Regulation Protocol is 4.4-7.2 mmol/L on Alphatrak.*

* (Based on their instructions to add 1.7 to the human meter values they define as range boundaries in the main body of the protocol for the lower BG levels).

For what it is worth:
I just did two tests with my original AlphaTrak and my human Easy Gluco Plus meter. Both comparisons used same drop of blood from two different cats
Dulce OTJ
AT = 72
Easy Gluco Plus = 54

Badgar
AT = 377
Easy Gluco Plus = 331
