When using 1.5 and a little smaller doses, I did get reading in the 100's midcycle for the past 3 or 4 weeks. Now, I seem to be getting reading in the 200's with the same dose? What do you think about my numbers? I may have given a fur shot once to twice? Should I give it more time? Do you think the smaller doses were better?

August 24, I got a reading of 167 at 5 hours and 35 minutes and the BG may have been still lowering.

When I called the vet a sub vet on Monday, mine is on vacation for 3 weeks, he said give it a week and then get some readings.

As I said in your thread on Health, I'd get some mid cycle
numbers first to be sure he is not bouncing. If you decide to increase, be sure you are around to monitor.

Thanks Sue for writing me again so late.

Today, I gave a little less than 1.5 (exactly what I don't know, probably 1.3 -1.4) with the U-40 needle to see if I could get blue numbers again. I was happy to see blue. I got a 183 at +4 and a 110 at +5 hours and 45 minutes. The 110 could go lower yet. I just feed my cat a bit. The feeding would probably alter my numbers if I take another.

Maybe on some days I gave closer to 1.3 or 1.4
and other days I gave closer to 1.5 or 1.6. I didn't like the feel of the U-100 needle and I thought I gave a fur shot with it. You had to push very hard to give the shot. It sort of stuck? I just ordered the monoject brand on diabetes wholesale. I will try again. maybe it was a bounce not a fur shot when I used the u-100 needle to give 1.4. Maybe, my eyeball 1.4 on the U-40 was less than the U-100 1.4 measured dose. I am not sure.

When I did a mini-curve on about 1.33, my preshots were high although the other numbers looked good. It looked like the insulin was wearing off by hour 10 or 11.

Maybe, I should try 1.4 more and check the early numbers and mid numbers. I may have been giving 1.4 sometimes when I said 1.5 or maybe I gave 1.3 when I thought it was 1.4. Its hard to eyeball an exact dose. I don't want numbers too low since I will be at work for the peak part of the cycle.

It does look like you could have gotten a lower number after that last test, so that cpuld have been a pretty nice nadir. It also looks like you were 45 minutes late with the shot this am? So it could have been a yellow at the usual time.

You might start a new topic on this page asking for help with U 100 needles. Almost all the current PZI people use them; I never did, so have no good advice. They do make it easier to give those smaller doses consistently.

If you want to use U100 needles, it's not hard, & may make it easier for consistent dosing. I actually prefer them, since Cass reacts to small dose changes. U40 concentrated insulin is designed to give 40u of insulin per ml; u100 has 100u per ml. In other words, u40 is more dilute so a concersion factor is neede 1u of u40 insulin is equivalent to 0.4u of u100. This lets you be super acurate at intervals of 0.2u if you have u100 needles (orange cap) with half unit marks, and 0.1u is halfway between.

It's ptobably easiest to use the conversion chart, at least at first. It's here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions.htm

I see you're using 1.4u or 1 6u frequently. 1.4u =3.5u on u100 needles and 1.6u=4.0u on u100. If you do switch, make sure you post the real dose (1.4u), not the converted dose, or we'll yhink your cat has gone crazy. hope this helps!

Thanks. I ordered another brand from AMerican Diabetes. I had trouble with the first brand I tried. The plunger was very hard to move and I think I may have given a fur shot when I used it. I haven't taken them out of the box yet. I will see how they feel. I ordered Monject with half unit markings.
It is difficult to estimate doses with the U-40 needle.
Thanks
