Hello forum.

Ming is a 19-21yo spayed female dilute tortie polydactyl DMH. She's adorable and has been in our lives 2005, when her estimated age was 3-5yo; she was the foster cat who stayed.

We've been managing CKD since 2016 & hyperT since 2018.
New concerns: she's lost 8oz since Feb although is currently stabilized at 5lb 8oz, demonstrates increased drinking/urination over the past 2 mos, and currently requests food every 2-3 hrs when awake.

I suspect diabetes. We'll get labs in the next 2 weeks and have numbers to draw real conclusions from instead of speculation. In the meantime, I'm seeking words of wisdom from others who have managed these 3 conditions concurrently...

Congratulations on the foster fail and thank you.

I balanced diabetes and CKD. I believe @JanetNJ is balancing all three of the conditions you mention. Tagging her for you.

If you don't want to stress about this for the next 2 weeks, if you know someone who has a human glucometer you could borrow, you can get a few tests in yourself. Part of the lab work will be a fructosamine test. This test gives you an overall picture of a couple of weeks but not actual glucose readings.

Diabetic cats cannot metabolize their food properly and until they are regulated, they feel ravenous. What are you feeding for the CKD? The CKD food is very high in carbs. The dry is over 35% carbs. It is recommended for a diabetic cat that carbs be under 10%. If Ming is a diabetic, there are people here who can help you with food choices that are low phosphorous and low carb. You can get an idea of allowable foods here:

Welcome to the best place you never thought you would be. Other members will chime in before too long.

Ming's pantry contains a selection of commercial lower-phos foods, as well as phos binder for those which aren't the lowest. A portion is dry: a blend of Now Fresh & Purina NF, also royal canin A. The wet selection includes Koha turkey pate, k/d chicken stew, Dave's restricted diets, royal canin E, and some Koha tuna poke blends. She also gets protein supplementation in the form of cooked chicken and soon, Astros powder. Weruva steak frites used to be yummy, but no longer appeals.

I have found Tanya's CKD site an invaluable resource and learning there has guided most of our interventions for Ming.

Hi! My cat had all three. She's had diabetes for four years (acromegaly which means a pituitary tumor causing it so she's a high dose kitty). Ckd for a year, and hyperthyroidism since Dec.

If you want to see what your cats blood glucose levels are right now you c can get a meter and test her ear. Most of us test and monitor it from home. Maybe you can borrow a meter from someone. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.

The main thing you are going to want to do is make sure you are feeding a low carb low phosphorus wet food. The weruva steak is a good choice and there are a lot of other weruva foods that also fit that bill. Unfortunately the kd foods are usually high in carb and may be what triggered the diabetes.

This is what my cat is currently eating.

Weruva slide and serve pate foods Family Food (.97 phosphorus and 0 carb). Also Jeopurrdy Chicken (0.97 P 6.1 carb)

Weruva Steak Frites (0.57 phosphorus 7.5 carb although I take out any big pieces of potatoes to try to limit the carbs just a bit)

weruva Fowl Ball chicken and turkey (0.89phosphorus 0 carb).

Weruva LA isla Bonita - phosphorus 0.77 carb 4.5
Glam and punk 1% carb, 0.93 phosphorous.

Weruva paw lickin chicken 3.3 carb 0.82 p and
Press your lunch 5.9 carb. 0.82 phosphorous

Bff play Laugh Out Loud chicken and lamb 7.7 carb, 0.82 phosphorous

BFF play destiny (chicken and duck) 0.87 phosphorus 7.7 carb. THIS IS HER CURRENT FAVORITE

Bff play chicken cherish 0.71 phosphorus 7.6 carb
