Hello,
My name is Michelle. My partner Leo & I have the pleasure of our feline family member Putty, adopting us 15 ½ years ago. He is a beauteous black & white colored tuxedo and the tip of his tail is white.
We live in a trailer and travel south for the winter and then north for the summer. On this southbound trip Putty has not been eating or drinking much since 11/11/12. Also he's been having no stools and just small amounts of diarrhea, looks dark brownish/orange. So today we took him to a vet/animal clinic here in Louisa, VA. The attending vet said his temp is normal at 102; he didn't seem to have any pain when he touched his abdomen, etc. He did notice plaque build up on Putty's teeth and said there may be an infection there. He wanted to do blood work to see if there was something more going on and so we did; liver panels, CBC, thyroid, FELV/FIV (neg/neg) = $220.00. Later in the day he called us and said Putty has diabetes, based on his BG of 412. We don’t have any association with this vet and he seemed very wishy/washy about everything and flip flopped on anything we asked him. We plan to get in touch with some of our past vets but I’d like to know from others what there vet gave as a “definitive diagnosis” for feline diabetes?

Also the only thing not in norm on Putty’s blood test was the blood glucose and I've read this:
"Cats in general are prone to high blood sugar, typically during times of stress, where glucose levels may reach 300-400mg. This is often a temporary increase in blood sugar, and while it warrants further observation, it may not be cause to diagnose chronic hyperglycemia or diabetes mellitus."

I am very confused... confused_cat
Any information good or bad is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Michelle, Leo & Putty

Oh my - where to start. It is quite true that vet stress can cause blood glucose to rise. Did the vet give you copies of the test results? If not, you should definitely ask for them. Its a good idea to keep copies of test at all times, but even more important while you are travelling. In reply to your specific question, the fructosamine test (blood test that takes a few days to get results usually) is considered the definitive test. It provides an average of the blood glucose over the last 2 weeks.

What is Putty's food routine? It is important for Putty's general health to feed a wet canned food diet. Dry food is not good for cats. Many people on this board feed Fancy Feast or Friskies pates. If you look at catinfo.org (by Dr. Lisa, a vet who occasionally posts here and has recently revised the food charts) you will find a wealth of information about feeding Putty.

One of the easiest ways to monitor his bg and see if he is diabetic or perhaps transient diabetic would be to pick up a glucometer, strips and lancets at Walmart and test his blood yourself. If you want to pursue this option, say the word and we can point you to lots of resources to get you going.

The one thing that worries me a bit is not eating and unusual stool. What did the vet have to say about that?

Hello,

Yes I have copies of the blood test results. When we get settled into Sylvania, GA I will have to seek out a vet for the fructosamine test. Also I’ve read that a tooth infection can raise blood glucose levels and since the vet said he had one maybe we should just put him on Clavamox Drops for 7-10 days and then check his BG after? Besides that, road travel does cause stress on Putty too.

As of yesterday we stopped feeing him ANY dry food and we have Fancy Feast Classic cans to give him. Also my partner Leo bought fresh chicken & fish and he did good eating that. So another question raised now is how much or little should we feed him a day??

I will hold off on the BG meter for now but also see I can get one here for just the S&H charge, very nice.
The vet said nothing about his stool except it could be anything and didn’t give us anything to go on.

I think this website & board will be very helpful going forward for us and Putty and I’m grateful for those involved with it here.
