A rescue group that I'm affiliated with had a diabetic cat that we were attempting to manage with food alone in a shelter setting. While there her sugars ran around 250 to 275 in the habitat and 300+ at the vet. A wonderful couple adopted her two weeks ago. When they took her to be checked out by their vet five days after they brought her home her sugar was 117. Clearly getting her out of that stressful environment did wonders for her. At this point in time she isn't getting insulin. But her new family wants to be on top of things and do home testing periodically. What is your recommendation for how often they should be checking her?

They are coming to my house tomorrow to witness me checking Ben. And I'll probably let them practice on him. ( although Esther – their new kitty did fine when I checked her).

Thanks.

Squeak was on insulin the first time for 2 months then went into remission. I tested him weekly and caught it when he relapsed eight months later. The second time he was on insulin for 5 weeks before going back into remission. Based on that scare I continued to test him weekly until his death in Jan.

You might print out the Secondary Monitoring Tools in my signature, plus the linked grid for tracking, and have them monitor some of those things weekly. Changes in food and water intake and output, dehydration, and behavior can give you a heads up when anything is changing healthwise, not just diabetes.
