How long after the cat eats, do you guys give the insulin? Thanks And,in the beginning of George's diagnosis, he was very hungry. Now, it seem he is "picking" more slowly at it. Any suggestions?
I use Lantus. I have had George on 3 units since he was diagnosed 9/6/19. I have a Contour Next monitor, but scared I'm going to hurt him. I just got monitor yesterday. And, is there a window of time if he doesn't come to eat and then no insulin until next morning? Sometimes at night, he comes at 8:30, instead of 7:30. I try to give insulin at 7:30 am and 7:30 pm.What type of insulin are you using.?
That makes a difference as to how long you leave it after feeding before you give the insulin.
Unregulated diabetic cats can’t utilise the food properly and will get very hungry.
Are you home testing the blood sugars?
I would recommend you do as it is the only way to keep George safe.
I don't know what Signature is??? His BG was over 600 on Sept. 6th. He goes to Vet tomorrow. If you are using Lantus insulin, you test, feed and give the insulin in that order in about 15 minutes.
There is no need to wait after you feed to give the insulin.
Lantus works best if given each 12 hours. Try and keep it at 7.30 am and 7.30 pm if you can. Try not to miss any doses.
I am very glad you have a glucose meter. You won’t hurt him. Give him a treat each time you test.
Three units is a very large dose to start off with. Have you had any blood glucose tests done at the vet to check it’s not too much insulin?
I am heading off to bed now but will look in tomorrow to talk about your signature and spreadsheet.
