My love, my Quince has eaten very little for the past two days secondary to advanced ckd. Given that he is also diabetic, I'm wondering whether I should discontinue or adjust his Lantus (normally 1u twice a day). My vet isn't available until Monday and I'd like to address this asap. Thanks so much.

Hi,

I feel for you because I'm in a similar boat trying to feed my civvie, Lúnasa, at the moment (IRIS stage III). :bighug:

More suggestions:

Persuading your cat to eat

If you're in the US the above link has some suggestions on cat-safe baby foods to try (no onions, no garlic). Many members here have reported that their cats will eat a little of the baby food even when they reject all other foods so maybe worth a try for Quince.

Also, is he showing any signs of nausea? Here's another helpful page from Tanya's Site:

Nausea and inappetence - symptoms and treatments

Going forward, your little one needs to eat so it may be a case that you select a food that is agreeable to Quince and which helps with his CKD, and then work the dose of insulin around the dietary carb load.

If you post on the Lantus support board the members there should be able to help you with dosing, including suggestions on token dosing on days when Quince is only eating a little. To do that we'd need to get an idea of his dosing and the BG range he's running in (assuming that you're home testing his BG). I'm really sorry to have to ask this right now because I can imagine the stress and worry you must be experiencing but if you could set up one of our FDMB spreadsheets over the next couple of days with details of Quince's dosing and BG numbers for the last fortnight members will be able to help you more and make sound, safe suggestions on how to manage his insulin around the eating issues/dietary requirements. Here's what you need to get started:

If you'd like help getting started, give a shout and we'll get someone to help you. :)

I sincerely hope Quince's appetite improves - and soon. It's so hard when we can't get our little ones to eat, quadruply so when they also need their insulin.

A cat won't eat what it can't smell. I've gotten down on my hands and knees begging a cat to eat. Some extra stinky Fancy Feast did the trick.
Also make sure there's nothing dental bothering him or like with our Andy a constantly runny nose that sometimes prevents him from smelling anything.
If you've never syringe fed before there's a slight chance it can be a bit emotionally painful. Let's assume the best for now and if it does get harder than you expected come back here for advice.
